The SKF 22311 E spherical roller bearing, measuring 55 × 120 × 43 mm, offers a robust solution for high radial loads and angular shaft misalignment.
The 22311 E self-aligning roller bearing is an open rolling bearing designed for demanding industrial applications. Thanks to two rows of barrel-shaped rollers and the hollow-spherical outer ring raceway, the bearing automatically compensates for misalignment and shaft deflection during operation. The SKF version is made from 100Cr6 bearing steel and features a dimensionally stable sheet steel cage. The unit can be used within a temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees. The mounting dimensions are 55 mm bore, 120 mm outside diameter and 43 mm width.
This double-row roller bearing proves particularly effective where strong radial forces act on the shaft and misalignments arise due to manufacturing or load conditions. Typical applications include shaft mountings with elastic deflection or misalignment. As the design compensates for angular misalignment without a significant increase in friction, shafts remain correctly guided even under varying operating conditions. Design engineers use this design for demanding bearing arrangements subject to high radial loads.
Lubrication grooves and lubrication holes integrated into the outer ring facilitate relubrication whilst the bearing is installed, as the lubricant is fed directly between the rows of rollers. The running accuracy to tolerance class P5, in conjunction with the standard dimensional accuracy PN, ensures low-vibration concentricity. As this is an open bearing without integrated sealing washers, the external sealing of the bearing housing must be adapted to the ambient conditions in order to prevent lubricant loss and the ingress of contaminants.
With a bore of 55 mm, an outer diameter of 120 mm and a width of 43 mm, the 22311 E spherical roller bearing complies with standardised key dimensions. These dimensions enable high radial forces to be accommodated via the 43 mm wide raceway in standardised housings.
The P5 designation defines a tighter concentricity and axial run-out tolerance than the standard PN tolerance. Whilst the external mounting dimensions comply with the standard tolerance, the P5 running accuracy reduces concentricity errors during operation. This reduces vibrations and ensures smooth operation even under higher rotational demands.
Fresh lubricant enters the rolling element area directly via the lubrication groove and radial lubrication holes in the outer ring. As the bearing has an open design without seals, the bearing housing requires an external housing seal. Grease or lubricating oil can be replenished directly via the bearing housing at scheduled maintenance intervals.
The permissible temperature range is between -30 and +200 degrees. The 100Cr6 roller bearing steel and the sheet steel cage are designed for this range. For operation, a lubricant is recommended whose viscosity and composition are tailored to the actual operating temperature.
The hollow spherical raceway of the outer ring allows the rows of rolling elements to be freely adjusted around the centre of the bearing. As a result, the bearing automatically compensates for misalignment between the housing and the shaft, as well as shaft deflection. This helps to reduce harmful edge pressures on the rollers, thereby supporting the operational reliability of heavily loaded shaft bearings.
The bearing is manufactured with standard radial bearing clearance, which is designed for common shaft fits and typical operating temperatures. The bearing clearance describes the movement of the rollers prior to installation. It serves to compensate for heat-induced expansion of the bearing rings during normal continuous operation.
