Spherical Roller Bearings SKF 22222 EK/C3

SKF 22222 EK/C3 spherical roller bearing with a tapered bore, C3 clearance and main dimensions of 110 × 200 × 53 mm for demanding industrial applications.

The SKF 22222 EK/C3 self-aligning roller bearing accommodates heavy radial loads as well as axial loads acting in both directions. Thanks to two symmetrically arranged rows of rollers, this design automatically compensates for misalignment and shaft deflection. The open bearing is made of standard rolling bearing steel (100Cr6) and houses the rolling elements in a dimensionally stable sheet steel cage. A permissible temperature range of –30 to +200 degrees is also designed to cope with thermally demanding operating conditions in mechanical engineering.

For which operating conditions is the 22222 EK/C3 self-aligning roller bearing suitable?

Bearing arrangements subject to heavy radial forces and combined axial loads constitute the primary field of application for the 22222 EK/C3 self-aligning roller bearing. Where shafts deflect elastically under load or where there are misalignments in the housing, the hollow-spherical outer ring raceway counteracts impermissible edge stresses on the roller sets. The integrated lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring allows lubricants to be fed directly between the two sets of rollers, which simplifies the relubrication process within the housing.

What do the designations EK and C3 mean for the 22222 self-aligning roller bearing?

The designation letter K stands for a tapered bore with a taper ratio of 1:12, which allows the bearing to be mounted on tapered shaft seats or using suitable adapter sleeves. The additional designation C3 indicates a slightly increased radial clearance. This clearance compensates for the reduction in bearing clearance that occurs when the inner ring is slid onto the tapered seat. Furthermore, the C3 clearance accommodates thermal expansion between the inner and outer rings during continuous operation. The bearing is manufactured to standard tolerance PN with increased running accuracy P5.

What are the dimensions of the 22222 EK/C3 self-aligning roller bearing?

The main dimensions are a bore diameter of 110 mm, an external diameter of 200 mm and a width of 53 mm. The bore is tapered at a ratio of 1:12, which must be taken into account when designing the corresponding shaft seats or selecting suitable clamping sleeves.

Why does the bearing have a tapered bore?

A tapered bore allows for secure mounting on stepped, tapered shaft journals or smooth shafts using a clamping or withdrawal sleeve. The radial residual bearing clearance can be precisely adjusted during assembly by means of axial movement.

What is the function of the C3 clearance?

The C3 bearing clearance offers greater initial radial clearance than the standard version. When pressed onto a tapered seat, the inner ring expands, thereby reducing the bearing clearance. The C3 classification helps to ensure that, after installation and as the bearing warms up during operation, there remains sufficient clearance for the rollers to move.

How is the open storage area protected from contamination?

As this model is supplied as an open bearing without integrated sealing washers, the surrounding bearing housing provides the seal. Depending on the environment, external housing seals such as labyrinth seals or radial shaft seals are also used to prevent the ingress of dirt and moisture.

What is the purpose of the lubrication groove and the holes in the outer ring?

The circumferential groove and the lubrication holes in the outer ring are designed to allow targeted relubrication. Fresh grease or lubricating oil is thus fed directly, without detours, into the interior of the bearing between the two rows of rollers, which promotes even distribution of the lubricant across the entire set of rollers.

What accuracy classes apply to the 22222 EK/C3 spherical roller bearing?

This roller bearing combines standard dimensional accuracy (PN) with increased running accuracy to Class P5. The tighter tolerances on concentricity ensure smooth, low-vibration operation of the roller sets during demanding rotational movements.
