The SKF 2310/C3 self-aligning ball bearing, measuring 50x110x40 mm, compensates for misalignment and provides thermal reserves thanks to its C3 clearance.
The 2310 /C3 self-aligning ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing with a common hollow-spherical outer ring raceway and a cylindrical bore. Thanks to this design, the bearing automatically compensates for misalignment and shaft deflection during operation. The component is manufactured by SKF and is made from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6 in tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1. It is primarily used where misalignment between housings or dynamic shaft movements occur.
This double-row roller bearing is suitable for designs in which shafts deflect elastically or where manufacturing tolerances lead to axial misalignment. Typical applications are found in general mechanical engineering, particularly in long shaft guides and in designs with potential misalignments. Thanks to the integrated sheet steel cage and the permissible temperature range of –30 to +150 degrees, the component primarily absorbs radial and moderate axial forces, thereby preventing edge pressures on the rolling elements.
The /C3 designation indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. This increased clearance between the balls and raceways is beneficial when temperature differences arise between the inner and outer rings during operation, or when tight fits cause the inner ring to expand. As this is an open design without integrated sealing washers, the component requires external sealing of the bearing housing as well as a targeted supply of lubricant, such as grease or lubricating oil.
The bearing has an internal bore of 50 mm, an external diameter of 110 mm and a width of 40 mm. These standardised key dimensions determine the design of the shaft and the housing bore. Manufacturing is carried out in accordance with the standard tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1.
Two rows of balls run on a continuous, hollow-spherical raceway in the outer ring. If the shaft deviates from the centre line due to deflection or housing misalignment, the rolling elements, together with the inner ring, swing freely within the outer ring. This self-alignment reduces edge pressures and friction within the bearing assembly.
The suffix C3 indicates a larger radial clearance than the basic tolerance CN. During installation, the radial clearance is reduced by tight fits on the shaft and housing. The remaining operating clearance compensates for thermal expansion when the bearing heats up, ensuring that the rolling elements roll without stress.
As an open design without integrated sealing washers, the bearing requires lubrication via the surrounding housing. Depending on the operating conditions, rolling-element bearing greases or lubricating oils are suitable. An external sealing system protects the bearing chamber from the ingress of dirt, whilst the lubricant reaches the raceways and balls directly.
The permissible temperature range is between -30 and +150 degrees Celsius. Both the 100Cr6 roller bearing steel and the sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability within this temperature range. A lubricant must be selected for operation whose specification covers this application range.
The integrated sheet steel cage guides the two rows of balls and maintains a constant distance between the rolling elements. Due to its low weight, it generates low inertial forces when the speed changes. Furthermore, sheet steel is characterised by its thermal stability within the permissible temperature range.
