The SKF 2304 E-2RS1TN9 double-row self-aligning ball bearing compensates for angular misalignment and protects against contamination with 2RS1 seals (dimensions 20x52x21 mm).
The 2304 E-2RS1TN9 self-aligning ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing made from standard 100Cr6 bearing steel, with main dimensions of a 20 mm bore, 52 mm outer diameter and 21 mm width. Thanks to the common hollow-spherical raceway in the outer ring, the design automatically compensates for misalignment and shaft deflection during operation. This SKF design combines two rows of balls with a standard radial clearance and tolerance class P0/PN (ABEC 1) for industrial drives.
This self-aligning ball bearing is particularly suitable for applications where misalignment occurs between the housing and the shaft, or where shafts flex elastically during operation. The double-row design absorbs radial forces and guides the rolling elements along the hollow-spherical outer ring raceway. This design prevents excessive edge pressure and ensures smooth running even when the bearing is misaligned.
When selecting this bearing, the 2RS1 seals, which seal on both sides, and the TN9 polyamide cage are crucial. The seals keep out dirt particles and reduce lubricant leakage, but limit the maximum speed compared to open designs. The polyamide cage ensures low weight and flexible guidance within a temperature range of –30 to +100 degrees Celsius.
To ensure a precise fit, the housing dimensions – with an outer diameter of 52 mm and a 20 mm shaft seat – must be matched. Thanks to the integrated seal, the component is particularly suitable for environments exposed to dust or moisture.
This double-row roller bearing has a bore of 20 mm, an outside diameter of 52 mm and a total width of 21 mm. These dimensions define the required bearing seat on the cylindrical shaft and in the housing bore. The bearing is manufactured to tolerance class P0/PN and is ready for installation.
The designation 2RS1 indicates sealing lips fitted on both sides that make contact with the bearing. This design protects the interior of the bearing from solid contaminants and moisture, whilst at the same time retaining the lubricant inside the bearing. Due to the contact design, slightly more friction is generated during operation than with non-contact cover plates.
Standard radial bearing clearance refers to the radial displacement of the ball rows when the bearing is unloaded and no special clearance class, such as C3, is specified. It is suitable for applications with standard operating temperatures and normal fit conditions between the shaft and housing. Once the bearing has been correctly pressed into place, sufficient residual clearance remains to ensure smooth running of the rolling elements.
The permissible operating range is between -30 and +100 degrees Celsius. This range is determined by the TN9 polyamide cage and the elastomeric sealing lips. At continuously high temperatures above 100 degrees, the cage material fatigues more quickly; for this reason, alternative cage materials such as brass or sheet steel are recommended for high-temperature applications.
The designation TN9 indicates a polyamide cage. This material is characterised by its low weight, elastic properties and quiet running. Compared with heavier metal cages, polyamide reduces the inertial forces acting on the rows of balls; however, it is only suitable within the specified temperature range up to 100 degrees Celsius.
The outer ring has a continuous, hollow-spherical raceway in which the two rows of balls can move freely around the centre of the bearing. In the event of misalignment or slight deflection of the shaft, the ball assembly, together with the inner ring, swivels within the outer ring without causing jamming or damaging edge pressure.
