The SKF 2306 self-aligning ball bearing (30x72x27 mm) compensates for shaft misalignment and accommodates radial loads in a double-row configuration.
The SKF 2306 self-aligning ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing that absorbs radial forces and automatically compensates for angular misalignment during operation. With a spherical outer ring raceway, the component adapts to misalignment or deflection without unnecessarily increasing friction. Manufactured from standard 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel, this bearing is characterised by its dimensionally stable structure. Design engineers and maintenance technicians use it when the housing and shaft are not perfectly aligned.
This double-row rolling bearing is particularly suitable for bearing arrangements with long shafts or separate pedestal housings, where assembly inaccuracies and elastic deflection occur. Thanks to the spherical raceway in the outer ring, the inner ring and ball set oscillate freely, which counteracts excessive edge pressures on the raceways. Typical applications include bearings in general mechanical engineering where there are larger distances between bearing positions or separate housings. The bearing offers a suitable solution for moderate speeds and fluctuating shaft movements during operation.
As the 2306 self-aligning ball bearing is designed as an open bearing, it has no integrated sealing washers. Users tailor the lubrication with lubricating oil or grease directly to the specific operating environment. External protection against dirt particles and moisture at the housing seat must be provided as part of the design. The built-in sheet steel cage guides the two rows of balls at a uniform rolling element spacing and is suitable for an operating temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees. Under normal operating conditions, the standard radial bearing clearance meets the established specifications.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 30 mm, an outside diameter of 72 mm and a width across flats of 27 mm. During installation, care must be taken to ensure that the cylindrical seat of the standard version of the inner ring fits the shaft precisely.
The outer ring has a single hollow spherical raceway for both rows of balls. This allows the inner ring, together with the ball set, to pivot about the centre of the bearing. Static misalignments caused by inaccurate housing bores or dynamic shaft deflection during operation are automatically compensated for, which reduces edge loading on the raceways.
As an open roller bearing without sealing washers, this version is lubricated via the housing prior to commissioning. Depending on the rotational speed and operating conditions, either roller bearing grease or gear oil is used. The housing requires suitable external seals to minimise lubricant loss and prevent the ingress of dirt particles.
Tolerance class P0, also known as standard tolerance PN or ABEC 1, defines the permissible dimensional and running tolerances for rolling bearings. It is the established industry standard for general mechanical engineering. The dimensional accuracy of the bore, outer diameter and concentricity meets the standard requirements of industrial drive technology without any special requirements.
The combination of standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6 and a sheet steel cage is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +150 degrees. Within this temperature range, the microstructure remains dimensionally stable. When selecting a lubricant, you must ensure that its thermal operating range matches the operating conditions of the application.
The standard radial bearing clearance refers to the factory-set radial clearance between the rolling elements and the raceways when the bearing is unmounted. It is designed for standard fits on the shaft and in the housing at normal operating temperatures. After the inner ring has been pressed into place, a defined residual clearance remains, which ensures that the balls run smoothly and without jamming.
