The SKF 2217 angular contact ball bearing compensates for misalignment; it has main dimensions of 85 × 150 × 36 mm, a double-row design and a sheet steel cage.
The SKF 2217 double-row self-aligning ball bearing has a common spherical raceway in the outer ring. This design enables the two rows of balls to automatically compensate for angular misalignment between the shaft and the housing. Manufactured from rolling-bearing steel (100Cr6) with a cylindrical bore of 85 mm, this design primarily accommodates radial loads. The open design, without integrated sealing washers, allows grease or lubricating oil to be applied directly via the surrounding housing.
The double-row self-aligning ball bearing 2217 is used in applications where shaft deflection occurs or where there are misalignment-related deviations between the bearing seats. Designs featuring long shaft sections utilise this bearing type to compensate for static and dynamic misalignments during rotation. Thanks to the spherical outer ring raceway, the system adapts within design limits without causing increased edge pressures on the rolling elements.
This model does not require sealing rings and features a sheet steel cage. The cage guides the balls in both rows and is designed for an operating temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees Celsius. The version with standard radial clearance and the standard tolerance class P0 (ABEC 1) is suitable for common mounting conditions in mechanical engineering. An external seal must be provided for the bearing location within the housing to ensure proper operation.
The bearing has an internal diameter (bore) of 85 mm, an external diameter of 150 mm and a width across flats of 36 mm. It is a double-row roller bearing with a cylindrical inner ring bore, manufactured from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6 to standard dimensional and running tolerances.
The hollow spherical raceway in the outer ring allows the inner ring and ball set to adjust freely. Should the shaft become deflected or the housing become misaligned, the bearing automatically compensates for this angular misalignment. This prevents undesirable forced forces, which benefits the smooth running of the entire system.
Standard radial bearing clearance, often referred to technically as ‘CN’, defines the internal clearance between the rolling elements and the raceways prior to installation. This specification is designed to suit standard shaft and housing fits. Once the inner ring has been pressed into place, exactly the right amount of operating clearance remains to ensure low-friction concentricity.
In open designs without integrated seals, the choice of lubricant depends on the operating speed and ambient conditions. Mineral oil-based rolling-element bearing greases or continuous oil circulation lubrication are frequently used. An external housing seal protects the bearing housing from the ingress of contaminants.
The combination of a dimensionally stable sheet steel cage and heat-treated roller bearing steel (as standard) covers operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +150 degrees Celsius. When designing the bearing arrangement, care must be taken to ensure that the selected external lubricant is also approved for the prevailing operating temperature.
The model complies with the standard tolerances of Class P0 or PN, which corresponds to Class ABEC 1 in international terminology. This tolerance class covers the standard requirements of general mechanical and plant engineering in terms of dimensional accuracy, concentricity and parallelism.
