The SKF 2203 ETN9 self-aligning ball bearing with a 17 mm bore compensates for angular misalignment and houses two rows of balls in a lightweight polyamide cage.
The SKF 2203 ETN9 self-aligning ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6) with a common hollow-ball raceway in the outer ring. This design enables the inner ring, together with the ball rings, to automatically compensate for misalignment and shaft deflection during operation. With key dimensions of 17 mm bore diameter, 40 mm outer diameter and 16 mm width, this open bearing complies with tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1.
Design engineers and maintenance technicians select this bearing type primarily for shaft guides where misalignment occurs between the bearing positions or where shaft deflection arises under radial loads. The double-row bearing primarily absorbs radial forces, supports shafts with cylindrical bearing seats and compensates for static and dynamic angular misalignments. Typical applications include bearing arrangements with flexible or long shafts.
The suffix ETN9 indicates the version with a polyamide cage, which precisely maintains the spacing between the two rows of balls. This material reduces the rolling bearing’s own weight and promotes smooth, low-friction operation. The bearing is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees. As this is an open bearing without a seal, the bearing housing requires an external lubricant as well as protection against the ingress of contaminants.
The shared hollow spherical raceway of the outer ring allows the two rows of balls to compensate for angular misalignment between the shaft and the housing. As a result, the 2203 ETN9 self-aligning ball bearing counteracts additional edge pressures caused by shaft deflection or misalignment and accommodates radial loads with normal radial clearance.
This double-row roller bearing has an inner diameter of 17 mm, an outer diameter of 40 mm and a width of 16 mm. The dimensions are manufactured to the standard tolerance class P0/PN (corresponding to ABEC 1), which allows for direct fitting onto suitable 17 mm shafts in standardised housing bores.
The suffix ETN9 denotes a polyamide cage for guiding the two rows of balls. The cage material is characterised by its low weight and is designed for operation in a temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees.
The bearing does not have any factory-fitted seals. Therefore, lubrication must be provided using an external grease or lubricating oil during assembly. In addition, an external housing seal protects the raceways from dirt particles, moisture and fine dust to prevent premature wear of the 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel.
This specification refers to the defined clearance between the inner and outer ring raceways and the rolling elements as supplied. A standard bearing clearance (also referred to as CN) is intended for standard operation with typical fit selections and moderate operating temperatures, without causing unwanted stress in the bearing seat.
