The FAG QJ316 -N2-MPA four-point bearing, measuring 80 × 170 × 39 mm, accommodates axial loads on both sides whilst requiring minimal axial installation space.
The QJ316 -N2-MPA four-point bearing is a single-row rolling bearing with a split inner ring, designed to accommodate axial forces in both directions. Due to the geometry of the raceways, the rolling elements contact the rings at four points, enabling the bearing to accommodate axial loads in both directions. With a bore of 80 mm, an outer diameter of 170 mm and a width of 39 mm, this FAG model offers a compact solution for specific bearing locations in mechanical engineering and gearbox construction.
Design engineers prefer to use this bearing for alternating or purely axial loads. This roller bearing is often used as a pure axial bearing in combination with a separate radial bearing, with the outer ring having radial clearance within the housing. As the bearing is not self-retaining, the components can be fitted separately. This simplifies installation in split housings and confined spaces without compromising axial guidance accuracy.
The -N2 design features two retaining grooves in the outer ring, offset by 180 degrees. These grooves accommodate customer-supplied retaining pins and prevent the outer ring from rotating within the housing seat. The split inner ring also allows for the incorporation of a larger number of rolling elements, which enhances the axial load-carrying capacity. Fitted with a brass cage and designed for temperature ranges from -30 to +150 degrees, the open bearing is suitable for systems with controlled oil lubrication and normal radial clearance in tolerance class P0.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 80 mm, an outside diameter of 170 mm and a width of 39 mm. These dimensions correspond to the standardised main dimensions for roller bearings in this series. Before installation, the mating dimensions of the shaft and the housing must be checked to ensure a precise fit.
The two retaining grooves on the outer ring, offset by 180 degrees, serve to prevent the bearing from rotating within the housing. When the four-point bearing primarily absorbs axial forces and is radially free within the housing, suitable retaining pins engage in these grooves. This design prevents the outer ring from shifting or rotating within its housing seat during operation.
The two-piece inner ring allows a larger number of balls to be fitted between the raceways, enabling the bearing to transmit high axial forces. Furthermore, this non-self-retaining design facilitates assembly, as the outer ring with the rolling element set and the two inner ring halves can be positioned on the shaft and in the housing one after the other.
This roller bearing is designed for use at operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +150 degrees. The integrated brass cage retains its dimensional stability throughout this entire temperature range. When designing the bearing arrangement, it is recommended to use a lubricant whose thermal operating range corresponds to the expected operating temperatures.
As an open design, the construction has no integrated sealing or cover discs. This allows the lubricant – usually oil or grease – to reach the contact surfaces unhindered. In dusty or damp environments, the design requires an external housing seal to prevent the ingress of dirt particles and the escape of the lubricant.
The standard radial bearing clearance refers to the factory-set operating clearance of the rolling elements between the rings when the bearing is new. It is designed for standard fits and typical temperature differences between the inner and outer rings. Under conventional operating conditions, this bearing clearance ensures smooth running without causing excessive stress in the rolling element set.
