The SKF QJ216 MA four-point bearing, with an 80 mm bore, brass cage and split inner ring, provides precise axial guidance in both directions.
The QJ216 MA four-point bearing is a single-row angular contact ball bearing with a split inner ring, designed to accommodate high axial forces on both sides within a confined installation space. With dimensions of 80x140x26 mm, this open bearing belongs to the SKF Explorer performance class. It features a standard radial clearance and a solid brass cage for demanding operating conditions. As the outer ring has no groove, this rolling bearing is particularly suitable for compact designs where separate axial bearing arrangements are required.
In industrial drives and shaft mountings, the QJ216 MA four-point bearing is primarily used as a pure axial bearing with radial housing clearance. This design accommodates axial loads in both directions, whilst requiring significantly less installation space than double-row bearings. Thanks to the split inner ring, a high number of balls can be fitted, which enhances the axial load-carrying capacity. Under combined loads, an adjacent radial bearing typically absorbs the radial forces, whilst the four-point bearing ensures precise axial shaft guidance.
The split inner ring considerably simplifies assembly, as the inner ring halves and outer ring can be fitted separately onto the shaft and housing. With a tolerance class of P6 for dimensional accuracy and P5 for running accuracy, this SKF bearing delivers tighter concentricity than standard bearings. The robust brass cage allows for use in a temperature range from –30 to +150 degrees. When designing the assembly, ensure that the rings are supported on a flat, even surface to prevent misalignment and premature wear.
This roller bearing has a bore of 80 mm, an outer diameter of 140 mm and a width of 26 mm. A characteristic feature of the QJ series is the split inner ring, which allows the bearing rings to be fitted separately. The bearing is designed in an open configuration without a retaining groove in the outer ring.
The designation ‘MA’ stands for a machined solid brass cage that is guided on the outer ring. Brass cages are characterised by high dimensional stability and resistance to vibration. This makes this design suitable for demanding operating environments as well as for the specified temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees.
This specification indicates a higher level of manufacturing accuracy compared with the standard tolerance. The bearing offers dimensional accuracy to tolerance class P6 and even greater running accuracy to class P5. This grading reduces runout error during operation and ensures smooth running even at high speeds in precision applications.
Due to its design, this type of bearing is primarily intended to accommodate axial forces in both directions. Whilst it can support minor radial forces, a purely or predominantly radial load results in increased frictional resistance. In mechanical engineering, the bearing is therefore often fitted with radial housing clearance and combined with a separate radial bearing.
The bearing is manufactured with standard radial clearance. This standard clearance is designed for typical operating temperatures and recommended shaft fits. As four-point bearings primarily carry axial loads, the internal clearance largely determines the axial clearance after the split inner ring halves have been pressed onto the bearing seat on the shaft.
As this is an unsealed roller bearing, it is not filled with lubricant as standard. Lubrication is provided by the relevant lubrication system of the overall plant, using oil or grease. In addition, external seals on the housing and shaft must protect the bearing from the ingress of dirt.
