The SKF deep groove ball bearing 6209 -Z/C3 combines dimensions of 45x85x19 mm with a single-sided Z-end cap and increased C3 radial clearance for thermally stressed industrial applications.
The SKF 6209 -Z/C3 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing made from standard 100Cr6 bearing steel. The design accommodates radial forces as well as axial loads in both directions. The single-sided sheet metal cover protects one side against solid particles, whilst the open opposite side allows lubricant to enter from inside the housing. A steel sheet cage guides the rolling elements evenly between the raceways.
This bearing design is primarily used in machinery where operational heating occurs and lubricant is supplied from one side of the housing. As the bearing is designed for a temperature range of –20 to +150 degrees, it is suitable for bearing locations with significant heat generation. The asymmetrical seal shields against external contaminants, whilst grease or lubricating oil can reach the rolling elements unhindered from the open inner side.
This variant is selected when tight fits or temperature differences between the shaft and housing reduce the radial operating clearance. The designation C3 indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. This allows the bearing to compensate for thermal expansion without causing stress during operation. The non-contacting Z-cover ring does not generate any additional frictional heat and is suitable for tolerance class P0/PN.
With a 45 mm bore for the shaft seat, an outside diameter of 85 mm and a width across flats of 19 mm, the bearing complies with the standardised main dimensions. The outer ring has no flange or groove and can be fitted flush into cylindrical housing bores.
The suffix ‘Z’ denotes a single-sided cover plate made of sheet steel, which acts as a non-contact gap seal to protect against dirt particles. The suffix C3 indicates an increased radial bearing clearance. This combination prevents stress build-up if the shaft heats up more than the housing during operation.
The permissible temperature range is between -20 and +150 degrees Celsius. The standard 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel used, as well as the sheet steel cage, retain their dimensional stability within this range. The lubricants used should be suitable for this temperature range.
The bearing is fitted with a sheet steel cage which guides the rolling elements and maintains a uniform spacing between them. A sheet steel cage is characterised by its low weight, provides sufficient space for lubricants and is suitable for operating temperatures up to +150 degrees Celsius.
Manufacturing is carried out to tolerance class P0, also known as standard tolerance PN or ABEC 1. This accuracy class meets the standard requirements of general mechanical engineering and is designed to suit standardised fits between shafts and housings.
