The SKF 6308/C3 deep groove ball bearing combines dimensions of 40 × 90 × 23 mm with increased bearing clearance for demanding industrial applications.
The 6308 /C3 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing from SKF designed to transmit predominantly radial loads whilst accommodating moderate axial forces. Fitted with a robust sheet steel cage and manufactured from standard 100Cr6 rolling-element bearing steel, the bearing meets tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1. Thanks to its open design, this version is particularly suitable for applications where the lubricant circulates freely or where lubrication is provided by an existing oil bath.
This single-row bearing is primarily used in industrial drives, gearboxes and electric motors. As it does not feature integrated sealing washers, there is no frictional resistance caused by sealing lips, which facilitates operation at high speeds. The design, which has no flange or groove on the outer ring, allows for straightforward installation in cylindrical housing bores. Typical applications are found in enclosed machine rooms, where an external seal protects the component from contamination.
The suffix C3 indicates a slightly increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. This additional radial clearance compensates for dimensional changes caused by tight fits between the shaft and housing or by temperature differences between the inner and outer rings. At operating temperatures ranging from -20 to +150 degrees, the increased operating clearance prevents premature stress on the rolling elements. Before assembly, check whether your application requires this increased clearance or the standard version.
The roller bearing has an inner diameter of 40 mm, an outer diameter of 90 mm and a width of 23 mm. These dimensions define the required radial and axial installation clearance. Before installation, check the diameter of the shaft and the housing bore to ensure a centred fit within the required fit tolerances.
As an open roller bearing, this design does not use abiding sealing discs, resulting in minimal friction losses and reduced heat build-up during operation. However, it requires a clean installation environment and an external housing seal to prevent the ingress of particles and the escape of lubricant during operation.
The permissible operating range is between -20 and +150 degrees. Rings and rolling elements made from 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel retain their dimensional stability within this temperature range. Carefully select the lubricant used to suit the prevailing temperature, as open bearings are supplied via the surrounding machinery or an external lubrication point.
The sheet steel cage keeps the spherical rolling elements at a uniform distance apart and prevents them from coming into contact with one another in the raceway. This reduces friction and wear during high-speed rotation. Furthermore, the sheet steel cage is characterised by its low weight and reliably withstands mechanical stresses within the specified temperature range.
The classification as P0 or PN (corresponding to ABEC 1) defines the standard accuracy for dimensional, geometric and running accuracy of the outer and inner rings. This tolerance class is sufficient for the vast majority of industrial applications in mechanical and plant engineering, where normal requirements are placed on the shaft’s concentricity and guiding precision.
Variant C3 is recommended where both bearing rings are fitted with a press fit, and where there is significant heat input via the shaft. If the inner ring expands more than the outer ring, the radial clearance is reduced. The increased initial clearance prevents the balls from seizing at operating temperature, thereby maintaining the bearing’s intended smooth running.
