The SKF 6308-ZNR deep groove ball bearing, fitted with a snap ring and measuring 40x90x23 mm, provides compact axial retention whilst supporting radial loads.
The SKF 6308-ZNR single-row deep groove ball bearing combines radial load-carrying capacity with a space-saving axial locking mechanism. Manufactured from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6), the bearing has a bore of 40 mm, an outer diameter of 90 mm and a width of 23 mm. The combination of a single-sided sheet metal cover and a ring groove with a snap ring in the outer ring simplifies mechanical engineering designs. Fitted with a sheet steel cage, this bearing is designed for temperatures ranging from -20 to +150 degrees.
This rolling bearing is primarily used in designs where the housing bores are machined through. Thanks to the integrated retaining ring, the bearing can be locked axially directly against the housing wall. This saves installation space and reduces manufacturing costs. The bearing primarily absorbs radial forces, but also guides shafts axially in both directions. The single-sided Z-cover plate protects the interior from dirt particles, whilst the open opposite side allows lubrication via the lubrication circuit if required.
The designator ZNR indicates two functional features relevant to design and assembly. The ‘Z’ stands for a non-abrasive cover plate made of sheet steel on one side of the bearing, which minimises friction and prevents lubricant loss. The designation ‘NR’ refers to the ring groove in the outer ring with a fitted retaining ring. This design secures the bearing positively in the housing without the need for retaining rings on the shaft or complex housing covers. With standard radial bearing clearance and standard tolerance P0 (ABEC 1), the component is suitable for standard fit seats.
The bearing has an inner diameter of 40 mm, an outer diameter of 90 mm and a width of 23 mm. Thanks to these standardised key dimensions, it fits into corresponding standard housing bores, although the retaining ring located in the outer ring slightly increases the outer diameter radially at the fixing point.
The retaining ring sits in a groove in the outer ring and serves to secure the bearing axially within the housing. Designers use this design to avoid the need for housing shoulders or additional mounting caps. As a result, the housing bore can be machined as a continuous cylindrical bore, which reduces assembly effort and the space required for installation.
The designation ‘Z’ refers to a non-contact cover plate made of profiled sheet steel, which is fitted to one side of the bearing. It keeps out coarse dirt particles without generating additional heat or rotational resistance through friction. The open rear side allows lubricating oil from inside the housing to reach the rolling elements and raceways unhindered.
This bearing is designed for operating temperatures between -20 and +150 degrees Celsius. Both the rolling elements and rings, made from 100Cr6 bearing steel, and the dimensionally stable sheet steel cage retain their strength within this temperature range. You should take this temperature range into account when selecting the lubricant for the entire system.
Standard radial bearing clearance refers to the factory-set radial clearance between the balls and raceways when the bearing is unloaded prior to installation. This clearance compensates for temperature-induced expansion and for the reduced clearance caused by tight fits on the shaft and housing. It ensures smooth concentricity under normal operating conditions.
In this model, a sheet steel cage maintains the rolling elements at a uniform distance from one another. Sheet metal cages offer good strength combined with low weight and can easily withstand lubricants and thermal loads within the specified range up to +150 degrees. They represent the standard design for general industrial applications.
