The SKF 6303 -2Z/C3 single-row deep groove ball bearing (17x47x14 mm) features non-contact lip seals and increased bearing clearance for thermally stressed drives.
The SKF 6303 -2Z/C3 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing to standard tolerance class P0/ABEC 1, with a 17 mm bore, 47 mm outer diameter and 14 mm width. The rings and rolling elements are made of standard 100Cr6 rolling-element steel. A robust sheet-steel cage guides the balls evenly into the deep raceways. Thanks to the metal shields on both sides (2Z), the design protects the interior from coarse contamination without reducing the limiting speed due to friction.
This ball bearing primarily accommodates radial forces as well as moderate axial forces in both directions. The design is suitable for rotating shaft mountings subject to radial loads and elevated operating temperatures. As the two end plates provide a non-contact seal, the bearing operates with low friction even at high speeds. The permissible temperature range is from –20 to +120 degrees Celsius. This design is primarily intended for use in dry environments where solid particles must be kept out.
The additional designation C3 indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. The internal clearance compensates for thermal expansion when the shaft and housing reach different operating temperatures. The clearance also accommodates dimensional constrictions caused by tight fits when the inner ring is pressed onto the 17 mm shaft. For applications involving heat build-up during continuous operation, the C3 class counteracts internal stresses and ensures quiet, smooth running across the entire speed range.
With a bore diameter of 17 mm, an outside diameter of 47 mm and a width of 14 mm, the bearing complies with the standardised main dimensions of the ISO series. The outer ring is cylindrical, with no flange or groove. These standardised dimensions allow for direct fitting into suitable housing seats.
Cover plates made of profiled sheet steel, fitted on both sides, are the hallmark of the 2Z suffix (often also referred to as ZZ). These non-contacting gap covers keep coarse dirt particles out of the bearing interior. As they do not cause any friction against the inner ring, they are suitable for high speeds.
Greater radial clearance compensates for dimensional changes caused by the shaft heating up or tight fits during operation. Bearing clearance class C3 prevents the rolling elements from seizing up and contributes to low-friction operation under thermal stress.
The bearing is designed for a temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees Celsius. Within these limits, the components made from hardened 100Cr6 rolling-bearing steel and the sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability and mechanical strength under load.
The inner ring, outer ring and rolling elements are manufactured from conventional standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6. A dimensionally stable cage made from pressed sheet steel ensures that the balls are guided smoothly. The integrated cover plates are also made from profiled sheet steel.
Manufactured to the standard tolerance class P0 (equivalent to ABEC 1), the bearing meets all industrial specifications for concentricity and dimensional accuracy. This classification reliably meets standard requirements in general mechanical engineering and drive technology.
