The SKF 6244 M/C3 deep groove ball bearing, with a 220 mm bore, brass cage and C3 clearance, provides stable guidance for heavily loaded industrial shafts.
The 6244 M/C3 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing designed for demanding industrial applications with shaft diameters of 220 mm. SKF manufactures this open bearing from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6) with an outer diameter of 400 mm and a width of 65 mm. It primarily accommodates radial forces as well as axial loads in both directions. Due to its open design without integrated seals, the bearing is suitable for designs with an external lubrication supply via a housing system.
This large bearing is typically used for shaft diameters of 220 mm subject to combined radial and axial forces. The open design allows unimpeded circulation of lubricating oil or grease within the bearing housing. At operating temperatures ranging from –20 to +150 degrees, the rolling bearing steel retains its dimensional stability. Engineers use this design when large rotating shafts need to be guided with a smooth running action and a defined bearing clearance.
The designation ‘M’ stands for a solid brass cage which guides the rolling elements and withstands mechanical vibrations and high acceleration forces. The suffix ‘C3’ indicates an increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. This increased radial clearance compensates for thermal expansion caused by operating heat, as well as tight fits on the shaft. As a result, the bearing rotates freely and without harmful stress, even when there are temperature differences between the inner and outer rings.
The bearing has an internal bore of 220 mm, an external diameter of 400 mm and a width of 65 mm. The rolling elements and rings are made from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6. The cylindrical outer ring is manufactured without a flange or groove and complies with tolerance class P0/PN (ABEC 1).
The abbreviation ‘M’ denotes a solid brass cage. Compared with standard sheet metal cages, the brass cage offers greater strength and stability. It is suitable for demanding operating conditions involving vibration, shock loads or varying speeds in industrial shaft bearings.
The designation C3 indicates increased radial clearance as supplied. In the case of large bearings, the shaft heating up during operation often leads to greater expansion of the inner ring relative to the housing. The additional clearance helps to prevent the bearing from seizing up or overheating due to thermal stresses.
As an open bearing, this version is supplied ex works without sealing washers or grease. Lubrication is provided via the housing system, for example by means of an oil bath, recirculating lubrication or external greasing. The surrounding housing must be sealed with suitable sealing elements to prevent the ingress of dirt and the loss of lubricant.
The roller bearing is designed for a temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees. Within this range, the components made of roller bearing steel and the brass cage retain their dimensional stability. For operation, the lubricant used must also be approved for the relevant operating temperature.
The deep-groove ball bearing is manufactured to the standard tolerance class P0 or PN, which corresponds to the ABEC 1 classification. This standard precision is sufficient for standard installation in industrial machinery and ensures a precise fit on the 220 mm shaft.
