SKF 624-2Z compact deep-groove ball bearing with a 4 mm bore, 13 mm outer diameter and cover plates on both sides, designed for low-contamination small-scale applications.
The SKF 624 -2Z deep groove ball bearing is a compact, single-row miniature rolling bearing for precision engineering applications. With an inside diameter of 4 mm, an outside diameter of 13 mm and a width of 5 mm, it supports rotating shafts whilst taking up minimal space. The design, made from standard 100Cr6 bearing steel, combined with the dimensionally stable sheet steel cage, ensures smooth running. Manufactured to tolerance class P0/PN (ABEC 1), this size is suitable for both in-service repairs and new designs.
This miniature bearing is used in assemblies with limited installation space, where it primarily accommodates radial forces and low axial forces. Typical applications include compact small drives, precision mechanical mountings and assemblies in measurement and control technology. The 100Cr6 material withstands the continuous rolling motion of the rolling elements. As the outer ring is manufactured without a groove or flange, the bearing can be fitted directly into smooth housing bores. Maintenance engineers frequently use this design as a precise replacement in existing small devices.
The sheet metal end shields on both sides of the 2Z variant form a non-contact gap seal. They keep foreign particles out without increasing friction at the sealing lips. Consequently, the bearing rotates smoothly and is well suited to drives with limited power output. The permissible temperature range is from –20 to +120 degrees Celsius. Non-contact cover plates primarily protect against dust and solid particles; for environments exposed to direct splashing water or fine liquids, abiding seals are preferable.
With a bore of 4 mm, an outside diameter of 13 mm and a width of 5 mm, this bearing belongs to the miniature bearing category. The cylindrical outer ring has no groove or flange, meaning it can be fitted flush into standardised housing bores. Before installation, the shaft and housing diameters should be checked for a proper fit.
The designation -2Z indicates cover plates made of profiled sheet metal fitted on both sides. These gap covers protect the interior of the bearing from coarse contaminants and keep the grease within the bearing housing. As they do not come into contact with the inner ring, there is no loss due to friction. This supports high rotational speeds and prevents unnecessary heat build-up during operation.
The standard radial bearing clearance refers to the clearance between the rolling elements and the raceways when the bearing is unmounted. It ensures that the bearing can rotate freely after being pressed onto the shaft, and compensates for moderate temperature-induced expansion. For standard fits, this design offers a good balance between smooth running and guidance quality.
The bearing is specified for ambient temperatures between -20 and +120 degrees Celsius. Within these limits, the 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel and the sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability. For applications outside this range, you must use special lubricants or temperature-resistant materials to prevent bearing damage.
As a radial deep-groove ball bearing, this design primarily absorbs forces perpendicular to the axis of rotation. Due to the deep grooves in the inner and outer rings, the component also transmits moderate axial forces in both directions. If the axial loads are excessively high, you should instead consider angular contact ball bearings or thrust deep-groove ball bearings.
The bearing features a dimensionally stable sheet steel cage. This cage guides the rolling elements, made from standard bearing steel, evenly around the entire circumference and keeps the balls at a consistent distance from one another. Sheet metal cages are characterised by their low weight and are resistant to vibrations within the defined temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees Celsius.
