The SKF 6234 M deep groove ball bearing is an open rolling bearing with a brass cage, measuring 170 × 310 × 52 mm, designed for combined loads.
The 6234 M deep groove ball bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing made from 100Cr6 bearing steel. With shaft diameters of 170 mm, this design can accommodate high radial forces as well as axial loads on both sides. The open design without sealing washers allows direct lubrication via the surrounding installation space and is suitable for an operating temperature range of –20 to +150 degrees Celsius.
This design is primarily used in large-dimensioned shaft bearings that must simultaneously accommodate radial and axial loads. Wherever shafts with a diameter of 170 mm are mounted, the single-row construction supports the rotating components. Open roller bearings are preferably fitted in sealed housings, in which a lubrication circuit continuously supplies lubricant to the raceways and rolling elements whilst dissipating operating heat.
The suffix ‘M’ indicates a solid brass cage that guides the balls even under demanding conditions. Compared to pressed sheet steel cages, brass cages offer increased mechanical stability and perform well under vibrational loads or varying speeds. Together with the standard radial bearing clearance and tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1, this large bearing fits into standardised mounting seats for industrial applications.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 170 mm, an outside diameter of 310 mm and a width of 52 mm. The cylindrical outer ring is manufactured without a flange or ring groove. These standardised key dimensions define the required installation space on the shaft and within the housing.
The designation ‘M’ stands for a solid brass cage. Compared with standard sheet steel cages, the brass version is characterised by greater dimensional stability under mechanical loads and vibrations. The cage guides the rolling elements smoothly during operation and is suitable for demanding operating conditions.
As an open roller bearing, this design has no integrated seals. Lubrication is provided by the surrounding housing system, for example via oil circulation or a suitable grease seal. An external seal on the housing serves to limit the ingress of dirt particles and the escape of lubricant.
The rolling bearing is manufactured with standard radial bearing clearance. This bearing clearance refers to the radial play between the rolling elements and the raceways prior to installation. Standard clearance is designed for typical fit conditions on the shaft and in the housing, provided that no unusually large temperature differences occur between the inner and outer rings during operation.
The permissible operating temperature range for the 6234 M deep-groove ball bearing is between -20 and +150 degrees Celsius. The 100Cr6 rolling-bearing steel and the brass cage are designed for this temperature range. The actual thermal operating limit of the bearing assembly depends on the resistance of the lubricant used in the system.
The bearing is manufactured to tolerance class P0/PN, which corresponds to ABEC 1. This standard tolerance meets the usual requirements for dimensional and running accuracy in mechanical and plant engineering, and allows for installation in standardised bearing seats on shafts and housing bores.
