The SKF 6208 deep groove ball bearing is an open, single-row rolling bearing with a 40 mm bore, an 80 mm outer diameter and a width of 18 mm, made from 100Cr6 bearing steel.
As a single-row radial ball bearing, the SKF 6208 is one of the most widely used rolling bearings in industrial mechanical engineering. With a bore of 40 mm, an outside diameter of 80 mm and a width of 18 mm, the bearing primarily withstands radial forces, but is also suitable, to a limited extent, for axial loads in both directions. Manufactured from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6) in the Explorer design, this bearing type features a sheet steel cage. The permissible temperature range is from –20 to +120 degrees Celsius.
The open deep-groove ball bearing 6208 is suitable for bearing arrangements subject to predominantly radial loads and limited axial forces in both directions. As this version has no integrated seals, the lubricant can be supplied directly via the surrounding housing or a central lubrication system. Installation is recommended in clean or separately sealed mounting spaces to prevent dirt particles and moisture from reaching the raceways. The cylindrical outer ring, which has no flange or ring groove, allows for mounting in standardised housing bores.
This design features standard radial clearance and tolerance class P0/PN (ABEC 1). This ensures standardised dimensional and concentricity accuracies for industrial applications. By omitting contact sealing lips, the bearing remains free from additional frictional resistance, which helps to maintain a low operating temperature. When designing the application, it is important to ensure that a continuous supply of lubricant is available and that the temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees Celsius is maintained.
With a bore of 40 mm, an outer diameter of 80 mm and a width of 18 mm, the bearing complies with the standardised main dimensions of the 6208 series. The roller bearing has a smooth, cylindrical outer ring without a mounting flange or groove and can be fitted directly into cylindrical housing bores.
An open bearing does not come fitted with cover plates or sealing rings ex-works. The rolling elements and the sheet steel cage are freely accessible between the rings. This makes this model suitable for designs in which the lubricant circulates freely within the housing or where external shaft seals protect the bearing location from dirt and moisture.
The permissible temperature range is from -20 to +120 degrees Celsius. Within this range, the 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel and the sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability. When selecting a lubricant, care must be taken to ensure that the chosen grease or lubricating oil is approved for the actual operating temperature.
The standard radial bearing clearance refers to the standard radial clearance between the balls and the raceways prior to installation. This clearance is designed to fit standard shaft and housing seats. During operation, this radial clearance compensates for the thermal expansion of the rings, ensuring that the rolling elements roll without undue stress.
The designation P0 (corresponding to PN and ABEC 1) defines the standard tolerance class for rolling bearings in accordance with international standards. It specifies the permissible deviations for bore diameter, outer diameter and concentricity. This tolerance class meets the requirements of most standard industrial bearing applications.
The inner ring, outer ring and balls are made from through-hardened standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6), which offers high fatigue strength and wear resistance. The cage is made of pressed sheet steel. It guides the balls evenly along the pitch circle and prevents direct contact between the rolling elements.
