The SKF 608-2Z deep groove ball bearing is a compact miniature bearing with an 8 mm bore, sheet metal end shields on both sides and tight manufacturing tolerances.
The 608-2Z deep groove ball bearing is one of the most widely used miniature rolling bearings for small-diameter rotating shafts. As a single-row bearing in the SKF Explorer performance class, this component combines a slim design with a defined level of manufacturing quality. With dimensions of 8 mm inner diameter, 22 mm outer diameter and 7 mm width, the unit primarily accommodates radial forces as well as axial loads in both directions. Manufactured from 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel, the model operates with standard radial clearance.
The bearing is primarily used in compact small electric drives, hand tools, fans, as well as precision mechanical assemblies and measuring instruments. Thanks to the sheet steel cage and the sealed design, the construction retains its dimensional stability. The permissible temperature range extends from –20 to +120 degrees Celsius, allowing this rolling bearing to be flexibly integrated into workshop and industrial environments.
The suffix ‘-2Z’ denotes two non-contacting cover plates made of sheet steel. This design protects the interior from coarse dirt particles without generating additional friction or heat. The bearing is therefore suitable for higher speeds. Another key feature is the precision of manufacture: dimensional accuracy complies with tolerance class P6, whilst running accuracy is to class P5. This ensures smooth, low-vibration operation on precisely fitted shafts.
This miniature deep-groove ball bearing has an inside diameter of 8 mm, an outside diameter of 22 mm and a width of 7 mm. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has no flanges or ring grooves. Thanks to these dimensions, the component fits into standardised bearing seats in small appliances.
The designation -2Z refers to cover discs made of profiled sheet steel, fitted on both sides. Unlike sliding seals, these discs do not come into contact with the inner ring. This reduces rotational resistance to a minimum and prevents unnecessary heat build-up at high speeds, whilst still shielding the interior from dust and foreign particles.
These classes specify tighter manufacturing tolerances than the standard. The component has a dimensional accuracy of Class P6, which ensures precise mating dimensions at the shaft seat. The running accuracy meets Class P5, ensuring consistent concentricity and reducing vibrations.
This bearing is manufactured with a standard radial clearance, which does not require a separate suffix in the abbreviated designation. Under normal operating conditions and with conventional fits, this standard clearance provides a balanced relationship between the guidance of the rolling elements and freedom of movement, whilst allowing for slight operating heat build-up.
The roller bearing is specified for an operating temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees Celsius. Within this temperature range, the components made of roller bearing steel (100Cr6) and the sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability and mechanical strength. Exceeding these limits may adversely affect the material or the lubrication.
Both the bearing rings and the rolling elements are made from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6. This material is characterised by high compressive strength and wear resistance. A cage made of pressed sheet steel is used to guide the rolling elements, which keeps friction between the balls to a minimum.
