The SKF 6008 NR deep groove ball bearing combines compact dimensions of 40 × 68 × 15 mm with a ring groove and retaining ring for easy axial fixing.
The 6008 NR deep groove ball bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing made from standard 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel, with an inner diameter of 40 mm, an outer diameter of 68 mm and a width of 15 mm. Manufactured in the SKF Explorer design and tolerance class P6 (ABEC 3), this component is characterised by high running accuracy. Designed as an open bearing, it allows free passage of lubricant through the oil or grease circuit of a structure. The standard radial clearance promotes low-vibration operation in rotating assemblies with standardised fit seats.
This bearing primarily accommodates radial forces as well as moderate axial loads in both directions. Designers use the version with a ring groove and snap ring particularly where axial installation space is limited. The integrated retaining ring provides axial fixation within the housing, meaning that additional housing shoulders or retaining rings are not required. This makes the variant suitable for designs where space-saving shaft mountings with defined housing positioning are required. The permissible temperature range is from –20 to +150 degrees Celsius.
The designation NR stands for a ring groove with an inserted snap ring in the outer ring of the bearing. This design feature enables a positive-lock axial retention directly in a matching groove in the bearing housing. This feature saves installation space and reduces the manufacturing effort required for housing covers or threaded rings. As this is an unsealed bearing, its use requires an external housing seal to protect against contamination, as well as a continuous supply of lubricant. The robust sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements during operation.
The abbreviation NR denotes a ring groove in the outer ring, together with a matching retaining ring. This design facilitates the axial securing of the bearing unit in the housing, as the retaining ring engages directly with a groove in the housing. This saves axial installation space and simplifies assembly in compact housing designs.
The roller bearing has a bore of 40 mm, an outer diameter of 68 mm and a width of 15 mm. These standardised key dimensions allow for direct replacement in existing assemblies. The integrated ring groove on the outer ring does not affect the basic dimensions, but does require a correspondingly sized housing recess for the retaining ring.
The bearing, made from standard 100Cr6 rolling-element bearing steel with a sheet steel cage, is designed for operating temperatures between -20 and +150 degrees. As this is an open bearing without integrated rubber seals, the actual operating limit depends largely on the thermal stability of the external lubricant used.
Tolerance class P6 corresponds to the ABEC 3 standard and specifies tighter manufacturing tolerances than the standard class. This primarily concerns the dimensional, geometric and running accuracy of the raceways. The result is smoother running, reduced vibration and a more even load distribution at higher shaft speeds.
As an open bearing, the component is supplied ex works without sealing washers or grease. Lubricant can reach the rolling elements unimpeded, which is why the bearing must be supplied with oil or grease via the surrounding system. At the same time, an external housing seal protects against the ingress of dust, moisture and foreign particles.
Normal bearing clearance refers to the standardised radial clearance between the rolling elements and the raceways when the bearing is unmounted. It is dimensioned such that, with standard fits and moderate operating temperatures, smooth running with high guidance accuracy is achieved without any impermissible stresses occurring.
