The SKF 6004-Z/C3 deep groove ball bearing, with dimensions of 20x42x12 mm, increased C3 clearance and a single-sided cover plate, offers a precise rolling bearing solution.
The 6004 -Z/C3 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing made from standard rolling-element steel (100Cr6) in the Explorer performance class. Designed to accommodate predominantly radial and moderate axial loads, this rolling bearing combines a compact design with high running accuracy to tolerance class P5 and dimensional accuracy to P6. A sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly into the deep raceways of the inner and outer rings. The single-sided sheet metal cover protects the interior of the bearing, whilst the open opposite side allows for targeted relubrication within the housing.
The 6004 -Z/C3 deep-groove ball bearing is primarily used in rotating units and mechanical assemblies with a lubricant supply. Thanks to its permissible temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees, the bearing operates stably even under conditions of increased operating heat. The single-sided Z-cover plate keeps coarse dirt particles out from the outside without generating frictional heat. The open rear side allows lubricant from an oil bath or grease chamber in the machine housing to be fed directly to the raceways.
The C3 specification denotes a slightly increased radial bearing clearance. It compensates for thermal expansion caused by heating during operation, as well as the radial constriction resulting from tight fits on the shaft and housing, ensuring that the bearing does not become stressed. The non-contacting Z-cover made of sheet steel generates no frictional torque, unlike abiding seals. This design is suitable for high-speed bearing arrangements where one side of the assembly is already shielded by the surrounding machine housing.
This roller bearing has an inside diameter of 20 mm, an outside diameter of 42 mm and a width of 12 mm. The cylindrical outer ring has no flange or groove, which means the bearing can be fitted flush with standardised mounting bores.
The suffix indicates two technical features: the letter Z stands for a single-sided, non-contact cover plate made of sheet steel to protect against contamination. The suffix C3 indicates an increased radial bearing clearance compared to the standard value, which compensates for thermal expansion during operation.
A single-sided Z-seal keeps foreign matter out of the protected outer side, whilst the opposite side remains open. This allows the bearing to be relubricated from the inside via the housing cavity. Bearings sealed on both sides, on the other hand, are usually filled with grease at the factory and do not allow any external lubricant to enter.
The bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -20 to +150 degrees. The components, made from 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel, and the dimensionally stable sheet steel cage retain their mechanical strength and dimensional stability within this temperature range.
The bearing is manufactured to a high standard of precision: its dimensional accuracy complies with tolerance class P6, whilst its running accuracy meets the tighter tolerance class P5. This reduces runout errors and ensures smooth, low-vibration operation of the shaft.
