The SKF 6001 deep groove ball bearing is an open, single-row radial ball bearing with dimensions of 12 x 28 x 8 mm, designed for a wide range of industrial applications.
The 6001 deep groove ball bearing is one of the most commonly used roller bearings for shafts with an internal diameter of 12 mm. SKF manufactures this design from through-hardened standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6) with a sheet steel cage. As a single-row radial ball bearing, it primarily absorbs radial forces, but also supports shafts under axial loads on both sides. Thanks to its Explorer performance grade and enhanced dimensional and running accuracy, the bearing is suitable for demanding machine components operating continuously.
It is primarily used in compact mechanical assemblies with a cylindrical shaft seat. Its dimensions – with an outer diameter of 28 mm and a width of 8 mm – allow for space-saving housing designs. As the component is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -20 to +120 degrees, it covers typical operating conditions in general mechanical engineering. The version without sealing washers is ideal for applications where low friction resistance and lubrication via the machine’s internal oil circuit are required.
This model combines dimensional accuracy to tolerance class P6 with running accuracy to class P5. Compared with standard tolerance, the tighter manufacturing tolerances reduce runout error and ensure smooth running during operation. As this is an open bearing, it has no integrated seals. An external seal in the housing therefore provides protection against dirt particles, whilst the lubricant is supplied via the overarching system.
With a bore of 12 mm, an outer diameter of 28 mm and a width of 8 mm, this component complies with the standardised dimensions for this size. The outer ring has no flange or ring groove. These dimensions make the roller bearing a compact solution for cylindrical bearing seats.
The operating temperature range is specified as -20 to +120 degrees. The 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel and the stamped sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability within this range. When selecting the lubricant for the housing, you should ensure that its thermal suitability is appropriate for this temperature range.
The designation P6 indicates a tighter dimensional tolerance for the bore and outer diameter than the standard. The designation P5 defines an even tighter running accuracy for the rotating rings. This combination reduces both radial and axial deviations, which contributes to exceptionally smooth running, particularly in vibration-sensitive drive systems.
Open roller bearings do not have integrated cover plates or sealing discs. As a result, they do not generate any additional sealing friction torque, which minimises heat build-up at high speeds. The lubricant reaches the rolling elements and raceways directly. However, installation requires that the surrounding structure protects the bearing from dirt and moisture.
The model is manufactured with standard radial bearing clearance. This bearing clearance compensates for typical fit allowances on the shaft as well as the thermal expansion of the rings during operation. For standard applications without extreme temperature differentials between the shaft and the housing, the standard version offers a balanced combination of guidance accuracy and smooth running.
The rings and rolling elements are made from through-hardened standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6). This chromium-alloyed steel is characterised by high strength and wear resistance under alternating rolling loads. The balls are guided by a dimensionally stable cage made of sheet steel, which is designed for lubrication with grease or circulating oil.
