The SKF 16048 MA deep groove ball bearing, measuring 240 × 360 × 37 mm, is an open rolling bearing with a robust brass cage designed for demanding radial loads.
The SKF 16048 MA deep groove ball bearing is an open, single-row rolling bearing designed for shaft diameters of 240 mm. Fitted with an externally guided brass cage, this radial ball bearing primarily absorbs radial loads and guides the rolling elements precisely within the raceway. As it does not feature integrated seals, the component is particularly suitable for systems with a locally supplied lubricant supply. With an outer diameter of 360 mm and a narrow width of 37 mm, this design saves valuable installation space.
This rolling bearing is primarily used in bearing arrangements with large shaft diameters and predominantly radial loads. In such environments, the design reliably supports shafts with a diameter of 240 mm and transfers forces to the housing in a controlled manner. Thanks to its permissible temperature range of –20 to +150 degrees, this design also performs well under thermally demanding operating conditions. As the bearing is of an open design, it can be integrated directly into existing lubrication circuits.
The suffix ‘MA’ denotes a solid brass cage that is guided on the outer ring. This external guidance stabilises the rolling elements even during periods of high acceleration or vibration during operation. The brass material reduces friction torques and offers high wear resistance. Together with the standard tolerance class P0 and normal radial bearing clearance, the component meets basic industrial specifications. When designing the assembly, ensure an external seal is incorporated into the housing to prevent the ingress of contaminants and lubricant loss.
With a bore of 240 mm, an outside diameter of 360 mm and a width of 37 mm, this bearing is a narrow design. These dimensions are suitable for applications with limited axial installation space. Both rings and the rolling elements are made from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6.
At SKF, the abbreviation MA refers to a solid brass cage that is guided along the outer ring. This guidance ensures precise alignment of the balls within the raceway. The brass design can withstand high mechanical loads and retains its shape even at varying speeds.
The permissible operating temperature range is from -20 to +150 degrees. As no plastic seals that come into contact with the system are fitted, the actual thermal limit during operation depends largely on the lubricant selected. Lubricating oils or greases must be suitable for the respective operating temperature.
Open bearings have neither seals nor cover plates, meaning that the rolling elements are directly accessible. This allows for a continuous supply of lubricant via an external recirculating lubrication system. At the same time, the design requires suitable housing seals to prevent dirt particles from entering the interior.
The bearing is manufactured with standard radial clearance. This designation refers to the radial clearance provided by the manufacturer between the outer ring, the balls and the inner ring prior to installation. It covers typical installation scenarios with standard fits and moderate temperature differences between the inner and outer rings.
Manufactured to the standard tolerance class P0 or PN, this design complies with the ABEC 1 classification. This specification defines the dimensional, geometric and running accuracies required for general mechanical engineering and ensures a precise fit when mounted on shafts and housing seats with corresponding tolerances.
