The SKF deep groove ball bearing 6208 N (40x80x18 mm) features an integrated ring groove for space-saving axial retention in compact industrial housings.
The SKF 6208 N single-row deep groove ball bearing is designed primarily to withstand radial loads as well as moderate axial forces. Manufactured from standard 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel, this design features a ring groove on the outer ring. This open rolling bearing has no integrated sealing washers. This makes it particularly suitable for designs with an existing lubrication system or external housing seal. With standard radial clearance and a sheet steel cage, the bearing operates reliably in mechanical drives.
It is primarily used in mechanical assemblies where confined installation spaces require a positive-lock axial retention. The ring groove on the outer ring allows the component to be secured directly in the housing bore using a suitable retaining ring. This eliminates the need for additional housing shoulders or spacer sleeves. Thanks to its open design, lubricant can reach the rolling elements and raceways unhindered during operation.
The designation ‘N’ indicates a precisely machined annular groove in the outer ring. This groove is used for axial fixation via a snap ring, which reduces the axial space requirement and simplifies the housing design. The bearing is manufactured to tolerance class P0/PN (corresponding to ABEC 1) and is designed for operating temperatures ranging from –20 to +150 degrees Celsius. In environments prone to contamination, an external seal must be fitted to the bearing housing.
The designation ‘N’ indicates a circumferential groove in the outer ring. A suitable retaining ring can be fitted into this groove to secure the rolling bearing axially within the housing, without the need to machine additional shoulder faces or retaining flanges.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 40 mm, an outside diameter of 80 mm and a width of 18 mm. These geometric dimensions determine the appropriate shaft and housing fit.
The bearing is manufactured with standard radial clearance. This standard clearance is designed for normal operating temperatures and conventional fit conditions without excessive overlap.
The permissible temperature range is between -20 and +150 degrees Celsius. The integrated sheet steel cage and the 100Cr6 roller bearing steel retain their dimensional stability within this range.
The design, which does not feature cover plates or sealing discs, allows lubricating oil or grease to flow freely in circulating lubrication systems. An open bearing prevents friction losses caused by integrated sealing lips, but requires an external housing seal.
