The SKF 61812 open deep-groove ball bearing, measuring 60x78x10 mm, offers a space-saving bearing solution for compact installations and standard speeds.
The 61812 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing from the extra-narrow series, designed for shaft diameters of 60 mm. Thanks to its small cross-section – with an outer diameter of 78 mm and a width of just 10 mm – this design enables slim constructions whilst maintaining high rigidity. The version made from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6 primarily withstands radial forces as well as moderate axial forces. Designers and maintenance engineers use this bearing type when installation space and weight within the housing are limited.
Its use is particularly recommended on shafts with a 60 mm diameter where the housing offers only limited radial installation space. Typical applications include general mechanical engineering, drive units, and guide systems or fixtures. As the design does not incorporate sealing washers, the component can be integrated directly into enclosed housings with an existing lubrication circuit.
This design features standard radial clearance and rolling element guidance via a sheet steel cage. Manufacture to tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1 ensures defined specifications for dimensional accuracy and concentricity. As the rolling elements remain uncovered, the assembly requires an external housing seal to prevent the ingress of dirt. The permissible operating temperature range is from -20 to +120 degrees. Before commissioning, clean bearing seats and a lubrication system suitable for this temperature range are required.
With an internal diameter of 60 mm, an external diameter of 78 mm and a width of 10 mm, this design is classified as a thin-section bearing. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has neither a flange nor a ring groove, which facilitates direct installation in smooth housing bores.
Without integrated sealing or cover plates, the bearing operates with low friction, as there are no sealing lips to cause drag. To prevent wear caused by foreign particles, the surrounding structure must be protected with external seals such as shaft seals. In addition, proper initial lubrication with a suitable oil or grease is required before commissioning.
Between the inner and outer rings, the sheet steel cage guides the balls, made of roller bearing steel, at a uniform distance and prevents them from coming into contact with one another. The component is characterised by its low mass and temperature resistance in the range from -20 to +120 degrees. Compared with solid cages, the sheet-metal design requires little clearance, ensuring that sufficient lubricant volume remains.
The standard radial clearance between the inner ring, outer ring and rolling elements is designed for conventional fits and normal operating temperatures. Provided that no extreme temperature differences occur between the rings during operation, the standard clearance ensures smooth running and even force distribution within the bearing.
The bearing is manufactured to tolerance class P0 (PN), which corresponds to the US classification ABEC 1. This specification defines the permissible deviations for bore, outer diameter and concentricity. It meets the standard requirements for industrial applications with typical demands on accuracy and fits.
The specified operating range is from -20 to +120 degrees. Both the rings and balls, made from 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel, and the sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability within this temperature range. To ensure reliable operation, the selected lubricant – whether grease or lubricating oil – must be suitable for the temperature prevailing during operation.
