The FAG 6224-C4 deep-groove ball bearing, with a 120 mm bore and increased C4 bearing clearance, allows for thermal expansion.
This single-row deep-groove ball bearing 6224 -C4 from FAG primarily accommodates radial loads as well as moderate axial forces in both directions. Manufactured from standard rolling-element bearing steel 100Cr6, the bearing is characterised by dimensional stability within a temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees. The sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements securely along the raceways. With dimensions of 120 × 215 × 40 mm, the component is suitable for demanding shaft mountings in mechanical and plant engineering.
The component is primarily used where significant operating heat is generated or where tight fits reduce internal clearance. As the outer ring is manufactured without a flange or ring groove, the rolling bearing can be fitted with a positive fit into cylindrical housing bores. By absorbing radial forces, the design supports smooth rotational movements even when there are thermal differences between the shaft and the housing.
The designation C4 indicates a significantly increased radial bearing clearance, which exceeds the normal operating clearance and is greater than the C3 class. This additional clearance serves to compensate for thermal expansion of the shaft without the rolling elements becoming stressed during operation. As an open bearing, this model has no sealing washers, meaning that lubrication must be supplied via the housing and an external housing seal is required.
The bearing has an inner diameter of 120 mm, an outer diameter of 215 mm and a width of 40 mm. These dimensions make the roller bearing suitable for 120 mm shafts in correspondingly sized cylindrical housing seats.
The designation C4 indicates a significantly increased radial clearance compared with the standard clearance and that of Class C3. This increased clearance prevents the rolling elements from becoming jammed when operating temperatures or tight fits restrict the radial clearance during operation.
Without any cover plates or sealing washers fitted by the manufacturer, the open design allows lubricating oil or grease to flow unimpeded directly onto the rolling elements. At the same time, this design requires an external housing seal to protect the bearing from dust, dirt particles and the escape of lubricant.
As it is manufactured from 100Cr6 roller bearing steel with a sheet steel cage, the bearing is specified for a temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees. Within these limits, the rings and rolling elements retain their hardness and dimensional stability under standard industrial conditions.
With a tolerance class of P0 or PN – designated internationally as ABEC 1 – the bearing complies with the usual standard tolerances for standard rolling bearings. This design meets the standard requirements for dimensional and concentricity accuracy in mechanical engineering.
