The 6040 -M-C3 deep groove ball bearing from FAG Wälzlager, with dimensions of 200 × 310 × 51 mm, a brass cage and C3 clearance, provides a solid basis for heavy-duty shaft mountings.
The 6040 -M-C3 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing designed for large shaft diameters in mechanical and plant engineering. It primarily absorbs radial forces and also supports axial loads in both directions. As it is manufactured from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6, the rolling element and ring set remains dimensionally stable under varying loads. As an open roller bearing without integrated sealing washers, this component is particularly suitable for systems with on-site lubrication.
This large bearing is primarily used in demanding shaft mountings with high mechanical and thermal requirements. The solid brass cage guides the rolling elements reliably, enabling the bearing to perform well even under vibration or at higher speeds. As brass minimises friction between the cage and the balls, the bearing operates with thermal stability. Combined with the wide temperature range of –30 to +200 degrees, this design is suitable for demanding environmental conditions.
The suffix C3 indicates a slightly increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. This increased clearance compensates for thermal expansion caused by temperature differences between the inner and outer rings. Furthermore, the C3 radial clearance compensates for the narrowing that inevitably occurs with tight press fits on large shafts. Design engineers choose this variant to effectively reduce the risk of restrictive bearing play during operation at elevated temperatures.
The bearing has an internal diameter of 200 mm, an external diameter of 310 mm and a width of 51 mm. These specified key dimensions determine the required installation space for the shaft and housing. Before assembly, always check the bearing seating surfaces on the shaft and housing to ensure they match these dimensions.
The suffix ‘M’ indicates a solid brass cage. Brass cages offer greater strength than conventional sheet steel cages and provide favourable sliding behaviour in relation to the rolling elements. They are primarily used in large bearings, under higher dynamic loads or where shock loads occur during operation.
Bearing clearance class C3 denotes increased radial clearance when new. When heated during continuous operation, the inner ring often expands more than the outer ring. The C3 bearing clearance helps to ensure that the bearing rotates freely and without binding, despite thermal expansion and large fit allowances.
As this component has no integrated seals, lubricant reaches the raceways and the brass cage freely. The bearing is lubricated either via an external oil circulation system or with rolling-bearing grease applied via the housing. An external housing seal is required to keep contaminants out and prevent lubricant loss.
The bearing is manufactured to the standard tolerance class ‘Normal’, also known as P0 or ABEC 1. This tolerance class defines the permissible deviations in dimensions, form and running accuracy for standard industrial applications. It is entirely sufficient for most applications in general mechanical engineering and plant construction.
The bearing is designed for an operating temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees. Both the 100Cr6 rings and the brass cage maintain their dimensional accuracy within these limits. When designing the lubrication system, care must be taken to ensure that the oil or grease used is approved for the relevant operating temperature.
