The FAG 16004 deep-groove ball bearing, measuring 20 × 42 × 8 mm, offers a compact design for radial guidance within a temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees.
The 16004 deep groove ball bearing from FAG Rolling Bearings is a single-row radial ball bearing to standard tolerance P0/ABEC 1. It has a bore of 20 mm, an outside diameter of 42 mm and a narrow width of 8 mm. Manufactured from standard rolling-bearing steel (100Cr6), the bearing primarily carries radial loads and also accommodates light axial forces in both directions. The integrated sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly during operation.
Design engineers opt for the 16004 deep groove ball bearing when radial installation space is limited and a narrow housing width is required. Typical applications include compact shaft and drive designs with a clean lubrication system. As the bearing is open at both ends, it requires a clean installation environment or a sealed housing. In such systems, the rolling bearing can be flexibly integrated into centralised oil or grease lubrication systems.
This model is supplied without integrated sealing washers and has a standard radial bearing clearance. The internal bearing clearance helps to compensate for minor dimensional changes caused by heating during operation, without generating impermissible stresses in the rolling contact. As there is no contact sealing ring to generate friction, the open design is suitable for low-friction operation. When designing the system, care must be taken to ensure that lubrication is provided by the surrounding unit and that no dirt particles reach the raceways.
With an internal diameter of 20 mm, an external diameter of 42 mm and a width of 8 mm, the 160 series is one of the narrowest roller bearings available. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has neither a flange nor a ring groove.
As there are no integrated sealing washers, no sealing friction occurs during operation. This bearing is used when the installation point in the housing is externally sealed or is supplied via a lubrication system. Lubrication can be carried out on site using grease or lubricating oil.
Normal bearing clearance refers to the radial clearance specified by the manufacturer when the bearing is unmounted, which is designed for standard fit combinations and typical operating temperatures. When the bearing heats up during operation, the rolling elements move freely within the grooves of the inner and outer rings, allowing the components to roll without harmful preload.
The permissible temperature range is between -20 and +150 degrees Celsius. The 100Cr6 roller bearing steel and the sturdy sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability within this range. In practice, the actual operating limit is determined by the lubricant used, which must be suited to the specific operating temperature.
P0, or ABEC 1, defines the standard tolerance class for rolling bearings. It specifies the permissible deviations for the bore, outer diameter and concentricity. This tolerance class is sufficient for standard applications with standard requirements for the shaft and housing bore.
Both the solid bearing rings and the balls are made from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6). This case-hardened chrome steel is characterised by high fatigue strength and wear resistance. Together with the pressed sheet steel cage, this material ensures smooth running under predominantly radial loads.
