The SKF 4208 ATN9 deep groove ball bearing is a double-row radial ball bearing measuring 40x80x23 mm, featuring a low-noise polyamide cage for a wide range of industrial applications.
As a double-row ball bearing, the SKF 4208 ATN9 accommodates radial loads as well as axial forces in both directions. Thanks to its two rows of balls, the design offers increased load-carrying capacity compared with single-row versions of the same dimensions, with an inside diameter of 40 mm. Manufactured from standard rolling-element bearing steel 100Cr6, the component complies with standard tolerance P0 or ABEC 1. The bearing is used in industrial drive systems where compact dimensions and radial guidance are required.
This double-row bearing is used when single-row deep groove ball bearings reach their load limits and the installation space for larger outer diameters is restricted. The design accommodates combined radial and axial loads, such as those encountered in mechanical drive trains and rotating shafts. As this is an open design without a flange or groove on the outer ring, the rolling bearing can be integrated into enclosed housings in which a lubrication circuit or external lubricants supply the rolling elements.
The suffix ATN9 denotes a polyamide cage that guides the balls in both rows. This cage material reduces the weight of the bearing, ensures low-vibration operation and contributes to noise reduction. The bearing is designed for a temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees. During operation, the normal radial bearing clearance ensures smooth running with standardised fit conditions on the shaft and housing.
The deep-groove ball bearing has an inner diameter of 40 mm, an outer diameter of 80 mm and a width of 23 mm. The outer ring is cylindrical in shape and has neither a flange nor a ring groove. Thanks to these dimensions, the roller bearing fits into standardised housing bores.
Double-row deep-groove ball bearings have two parallel rows of balls in separate raceways. As a result, the load is distributed across more rolling elements than in single-row bearings of the same dimensions. This design enables a higher radial load capacity with a moderate bearing width, but requires precise alignment of the shaft.
The designation ATN9 describes the cage design of the rolling bearing. It denotes a polyamide cage that precisely maintains the spacing between the rolling elements of both rows of balls. Polyamide cages are characterised by low internal friction and smooth running, and are suitable for operating temperatures between -20 and +120 degrees Celsius.
The open design has neither sealing rings nor cover plates fitted at the factory, meaning that the rolling elements and the cage remain freely accessible. Designs with oil lubrication or a gear-side lubrication circuit benefit from this configuration, as the lubricant can circulate unhindered. External seals must be provided in the design to prevent the ingress of contaminants.
Standard radial bearing clearance refers to the standardised operating clearance between the rolling elements and the raceways when the bearing is unmounted. This clearance compensates for the reduction in clearance caused by tight fits when the inner ring is pressed into place, as well as for moderate temperature variations during operation, without subjecting the rows of balls to excessive stress.
The model is manufactured to tolerance class P0 or PN, which corresponds to ABEC 1. This class defines the permissible deviations for bore and outer diameters, as well as roundness. It reliably meets the dimensional accuracy requirements of standard mechanical and plant engineering.
