The SKF 6244 M deep-groove ball bearing with a brass cage offers high load-carrying capacity with main dimensions of 220 × 400 × 65 mm for large industrial gearboxes and heavy machinery.
This single-row 6244 M deep groove ball bearing from SKF primarily accommodates radial forces as well as axial loads in both directions. The open design, without integrated sealing washers, allows for direct lubrication via the surrounding machinery. Manufactured from standard rolling-element bearing steel (100Cr6), this design is suitable for operating temperatures ranging from –20 to +150 degrees. With standard radial clearance and tolerance class P0/PN (ABEC 1), the bearing complies with the common standard for industrial applications.
Design engineers primarily select the 6244 M deep-groove ball bearing for heavy-duty industrial gearboxes, large electric motors and industrial drives. With dimensions of a 220 mm bore and a 400 mm outer diameter, the component supports heavy rotating shafts in continuous operation. As it is an open bearing, it can be integrated directly into existing oil circulation systems or lubricated manually with grease. The symmetrical raceway geometry helps to ensure even force distribution during operation.
The suffix ‘M’ denotes a solid brass cage that guides the rolling elements precisely. Compared with standard cages made from pressed sheet steel, brass offers high strength and is less susceptible to vibrations, impacts and high acceleration forces. Furthermore, the material performs well under conditions of insufficient lubrication, as brass possesses favourable emergency running properties. In demanding operating conditions involving dirt or vibrations, this cage design ensures stable operation of the bearing assembly.
The component has an internal diameter (bore) of 220 mm, an external diameter of 400 mm and a width of 65 mm. These standardised key dimensions enable a precise fit when installed on corresponding drive shafts and in standardised housing bores in heavy machinery engineering.
The abbreviation ‘M’ stands for a solid brass cage. This type of cage is characterised by high dimensional stability and resistance to vibration. It guides the balls even under shock loads or rapid changes in speed, and is suitable for thermally and mechanically demanding operating conditions.
SKF specifies this bearing for an operating temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees Celsius. The 100Cr6 rolling-element bearing steel retains its dimensional stability within this range. As the bearing is of an open design, the thermal stability of the lubricant used determines the actual permissible continuous operating temperature of the bearing.
Open roller bearings are not pre-filled with grease at the factory and do not have sealing washers. During installation, they must either be filled with an application-specific grease or supplied via a centralised oil or circulating lubrication system. Surrounding housing seals protect the bearing from contamination and keep the lubricant within the bearing housing.
This model features the standard radial bearing clearance. The radial operating clearance is therefore within the standardised medium range for this bearing size. It ensures smooth running at normal operating temperatures and with typical fit conditions between the shaft and the housing bore.
The bearing is manufactured to the standard tolerance class P0/PN, which corresponds to the American ABEC 1 classification. This class fully meets the requirements of general mechanical and plant engineering in terms of dimensional, geometric and running accuracy, and allows for straightforward replacement during maintenance work.
