The FAG 6317-C3 deep-groove ball bearing, with dimensions of 85 × 180 × 41 mm and increased bearing clearance, ensures reliable operation under thermal stress.
The 6317-C3 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing in an open design. Manufactured from standard rolling bearing steel 100Cr6, this bearing primarily accommodates radial forces as well as axial forces in both directions. The design, which features no flange or groove on the outer ring, facilitates cylindrical mounting in the housing. Thanks to its manufacture to standard tolerance P0 or ABEC 1, the component fits precisely into standardised bearing seats in industrial drivetrains.
Typical applications can be found in general mechanical engineering, as well as in gearboxes and industrial drive units. Thanks to its robust sheet-steel cage, the bearing guides the rolling elements with low vibration at medium to high speeds. As there are no integrated sealing washers to generate frictional heat, the rotational resistance remains low. Design engineers prefer to use this open variant in enclosed assemblies where an existing lubricant bath or a continuous oil circulation system supplies the rolling elements directly.
The designation C3 indicates an increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. This increased clearance between the balls and raceways helps to prevent the bearing assembly from becoming stressed when operational heat causes the shaft to expand thermally. Similarly, the C3 bearing clearance compensates for tight fits on the inner or outer ring without the rolling elements becoming jammed. With a permissible operating temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees, this component is therefore suitable for applications involving significant heat generation.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 85 mm, an outside diameter of 180 mm and a width of 41 mm. These dimensions correspond to the standardised metric series 63. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has neither ring grooves nor flanges.
The designation C3 indicates that the bearing has been manufactured with a slightly increased radial clearance. This design has been chosen to ensure that the bearing runs smoothly without harmful preload, even with a tight fit or in the event of temperature-induced expansion of the shaft and housing.
Open roller bearings do not have sealing lips or cover plates that come into contact with the bearing. As a result, they have a particularly low friction torque. They are designed for applications in which the housing seals the bearing housing from the outside and an external supply of lubricant, in the form of grease or oil, is provided.
The bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -20 to +150 degrees. Manufactured from standard 100Cr6 rolling-element bearing steel with a sheet steel cage, the component retains its mechanical strength and dimensional stability within this temperature range. The actual usable range depends on the lubricant selected.
This ball bearing uses a conventional sheet-steel cage. This cage is characterised by its low weight, takes up little space inside the bearing and allows lubricating oils or greases to pass unhindered to the running surfaces.
The model is manufactured to tolerance class P0 (standard tolerance PN), which corresponds to the ABEC 1 classification. This standard class meets the typical precision requirements of general mechanical engineering and drive technology, and facilitates the straightforward replacement of components.
