The FAG N316 -E-M1 cylindrical roller bearing is a single-row idler bearing with a brass cage, measuring 80 x 170 x 39 mm, designed for high radial loads.
The N316 -E-M1 cylindrical roller bearing from FAG Rolling Bearings is designed as a single-row radial roller bearing for applications requiring high radial forces at normal operating temperatures. Due to its N design, the bearing has two fixed flanges on the inner ring, whilst the flangeless outer ring can be removed from both sides. This design facilitates the separate assembly of both bearing rings. With key dimensions of an 80 mm bore, 170 mm outer diameter and 39 mm width, this open bearing functions purely as a support bearing in industrial machinery and plant engineering.
This design is primarily used where thermally induced changes in shaft length need to be compensated for without restriction. As the outer ring has no flanges, the shaft can move axially during operation without causing internal stresses. The component is suitable for industrial shaft mountings subject to high radial loads. As the bearing is of an open design, it can be integrated directly into an external lubrication system using oil or grease.
The solid brass cage (-M1) guides the cylindrical rollers precisely and is suitable for operating conditions involving vibrations or shock loads. With the standard tolerance class P0 (corresponding to ABEC 1) and standard radial clearance, this design meets typical precision requirements in standard mechanical engineering. The bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +150 degrees. When designing the assembly, ensure that axial forces are absorbed separately by a fixed bearing, as the N design cannot transmit axial forces.
The dimensions are 80 mm internal diameter (bore), 170 mm external diameter and 39 mm width. This is a single-row roller bearing in metric standard dimensions. Before fitting, check that the housing bore and the shaft seat correspond to these mounting dimensions.
In the N design, the inner ring has two fixed flanges, whilst the flangeless outer ring can be pulled off from both sides. This allows both bearing rings to be fitted separately. During operation, the bearing compensates for axial shaft expansion and therefore serves exclusively as a non-load-bearing bearing without supporting any axial loads.
The solid brass cage, designated M1, guides the rollers with a high degree of mechanical stability. Brass is characterised by its high strength and damping properties. This cage design is particularly suitable for demanding applications involving vibrations, shock loads or varying speeds during continuous operation.
The permissible temperature range is between -30 and +150 degrees. As this is an unsealed, open rolling bearing without factory-applied grease, the actual operating limit is determined by the external lubricant selected. Ensure that the lubricant is suitable for the thermal conditions of the application.
Normal radial bearing clearance refers to the standard clearance between the cylindrical rollers and the raceways when the bearing is unloaded. This bearing clearance ensures that, after being pressed onto the shaft and when heated during operation, the component can rotate freely without becoming radially jammed or generating excessive friction.
As an open roller bearing, this design has no integrated seals such as sealing lips or cover plates. The bearing location must be protected from dirt and moisture by the surrounding housing structure – for example, by means of external sealing elements – and must be externally lubricated. This allows for flexible use with either oil or grease lubrication.
