The SKF NU230 ECJ/C3 cylindrical roller bearing, with a 150 mm bore and increased bearing clearance, offers high radial load-carrying capacity when used as a non-locating bearing.
The SKF NU230 ECJ/C3 cylindrical roller bearing is a single-row rolling bearing designed for high radial loads in mechanical engineering. Thanks to the NU design, the outer ring has two solid flanges, whilst the inner ring is flangeless. This design allows for free axial length compensation directly within the bearing. The open bearing features an optimised internal design and a sheet steel cage that guides the rollers.
This cylindrical roller bearing is primarily used where purely radial forces are absorbed and thermal length changes in the shaft need to be compensated for. It is suitable for applications with separate fixed and floating bearing arrangements in heavy-duty shaft mountings. As the inner ring can be removed from both ends, the bearing can be fitted in sections. This simplifies installation and maintenance work within the housing, whilst the P6 running accuracy ensures precise concentricity.
The C3 designation indicates a slightly increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. This increased clearance helps to prevent the rollers from seizing up if temperature differences occur between the inner and outer rings during operation. Tight fits on the 150 mm shaft also reduce the residual radial clearance after press-fitting. Within the temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees, the C3 clearance thus ensures reliable operation under continuous operational loads.
The NU design features two fixed flanges on the outer ring and a flangeless inner ring. As a result, the bearing functions purely as a non-locating bearing. It absorbs radial forces and allows axial displacement of the shaft relative to the housing in both directions without causing internal stresses.
The bearing has an inner diameter of 150 mm at the bore, an outer diameter of 270 mm and a width of 45 mm. These key dimensions make it suitable for heavy-duty shaft support applications where a compact width is combined with high radial load-carrying capacity.
Bearing clearance class C3 indicates increased radial bearing clearance. This clearance is appropriate where interference fits on the shaft or housing cause the inner ring to expand, or where significant temperature differences occur during operation. The additional bearing clearance reduces the risk of the cylindrical rollers being subjected to excessive preload.
The suffix ‘ECJ’ denotes a sheet steel cage and an optimised internal design. The cage keeps the cylindrical rollers at a fixed distance apart and guides them during operation. Sheet steel cages offer adequate strength whilst being lightweight, and retain their dimensional stability across the bearing’s entire temperature range.
As this is an open bearing without integrated seals, an external lubricant supply via the housing is required. Lubrication can be carried out using grease or lubricating oil. As the outer ring has no lubrication groove or lubrication bore, the lubricant is supplied into the bearing chamber from the side.
The bearing combines two levels of precision: its dimensional accuracy corresponds to tolerance class P0 (or ABEC 1), whilst its running accuracy corresponds to class P6 (ABEC 3). This combination allows for standardised fits whilst maintaining high running precision.
