The FAG NU2228 -E-M1 cylindrical roller bearing, measuring 140 × 250 × 68 mm, serves as a robust idler bearing with a brass cage for high radial loads.
As a single-row radial roller bearing, the NU2228 -E-M1 cylindrical roller bearing can withstand very high radial loads. In machine designs with a 140 mm shaft diameter, the NU design allows axial length changes to be compensated for directly within the bearing. FAG equips this open rolling bearing with a solid brass cage, enabling it to withstand mechanical stresses during continuous industrial operation. The design without seals allows for direct operation within the customer’s oil or grease circulation system.
Design engineers prefer to use the NU2228 -E-M1 cylindrical roller bearing in mechanical drive trains and heavy-duty bearing arrangements subject to purely radial loads. As the inner ring has no flanges and can be removed from both sides, the bearing arrangement functions purely as a non-locating bearing. If thermal expansion of the shaft occurs during operation, the inner ring moves freely relative to the roller ring in the outer ring. This helps to prevent axial stress and protects adjacent components from additional loads.
The solid brass cage of type -M1 guides the cylindrical rollers precisely within the roller ring, even under varying speeds and vibrations. Compared with standard cages, brass withstands higher inertial forces and is suitable for operating temperatures ranging from –30 to +150 degrees Celsius. When selecting bearings, you should also take into account the tolerance class P0/PN (ABEC 1) and the standard radial clearance. As the bearing is of an open design, external seals must prevent the ingress of dirt particles.
With a cylindrical bore of 140 mm, an external diameter of 250 mm and a total width of 68 mm, the component complies with standardised dimensions. These dimensions allow the NU2228 -E-M1 cylindrical roller bearing to be fitted precisely into housing bores and mounted on suitable shaft journals.
In the NU design, the outer ring has two fixed guide flanges, whilst the inner ring has no flanges. This allows the inner ring to be removed from either side, which facilitates the separate assembly of the inner and outer rings. The bearing acts as a non-locating bearing and compensates for axial changes in shaft length with low friction.
The permissible temperature range is from -30 to +150 degrees Celsius. The thermal operating limit is determined by the material stability of the rings and the brass cage. To ensure trouble-free operation across this range, the selection of a suitable lubricant as part of the customer’s sealing concept is crucial.
This version is manufactured with standard radial bearing clearance (CN). This standard bearing clearance range is designed for conventional fits and typical operating temperatures. It ensures that, after the bearing rings have been pressed into place and following normal operating heat build-up, the required radial operating clearance is maintained to ensure smooth running.
The suffix M1 denotes a solid brass cage that guides the rollers and keeps them at a distance. Brass is characterised by high mechanical strength and resistance to vibrations. It is therefore suitable for demanding applications involving higher accelerations or impact loads.
As an open roller bearing, this model is designed for bearing seats that are sealed by the surrounding machine housing. This design allows for continuous lubrication via external oil or grease systems. At the same time, it eliminates the frictional resistance caused by rubbing sealing lips, which promotes thermally favourable running characteristics in high-speed machines.
