Cylindrical Roller Bearings SKF NU208 ECP/C3

The SKF NU208 ECP/C3 cylindrical roller bearing, with a 40 mm bore and increased C3 clearance, provides targeted clearance for high radial loads.

The NU208 ECP/C3 cylindrical roller bearing is a single-row radial roller bearing with an optimised internal design for demanding industrial applications. In this design, the outer ring guides the rollers via two fixed flanges, whilst the flangeless inner ring remains removable from both sides. As a result, the open roller bearing primarily serves as a floating bearing, which freely compensates for thermally induced length changes in the shaft within the bearing. With key dimensions of a 40 mm bore, 80 mm outer diameter and 18 mm width, the design is specifically suited to high radial loads.

What loads can the NU208 ECP/C3 cylindrical roller bearing accommodate?

The design accommodates high radial loads whilst simultaneously allowing unimpeded axial compensation between the shaft and housing. As the inner ring has no flanges, no harmful axial forces arise in the rolling element area when the shaft undergoes length changes. The bearing is suitable for mounting positions designed exclusively for radial guidance. The open design requires the housing to be sealed on site, as well as an external supply of grease or lubricating oil.

What are the benefits of the polyamide cage and the C3 clearance?

The polyamide cage (designation ECP) reduces the bearing weight and inertial forces, and operates with low vibration even at varying speeds. At the same time, the slightly increased C3 radial clearance provides the bearing with additional space for thermal expansion during operation, which prevents seizing at operating temperatures ranging from –30 to +120 degrees. The tolerance classes are also relevant during design: dimensional accuracy complies with P0/PN or ABEC 1, whilst running accuracy is manufactured to P6 or ABEC 3.

What are the dimensions of the NU208 ECP/C3 cylindrical roller bearing?

With a bore of 40 mm, an outer diameter of 80 mm and a width of 18 mm, the roller bearing complies with standardised key dimensions. These dimensions allow for direct installation in suitable housings and bearing seats. Before assembly, it is advisable to check the shaft and housing tolerances on site.

What does the NU design designation mean for this roller bearing?

In the NU design, the outer ring has two fixed flanges to guide the rollers, whilst the inner ring has no flanges. This allows the inner ring to be removed from either side, which facilitates the separate assembly of the shaft and housing. This design serves purely as a non-locating bearing and accommodates radial loads only.

Why is the increased radial bearing clearance (C3) important?

The version with C3 clearance has greater radial play than the standard CN version. This additional space compensates for temperature differences between the inner and outer rings caused by operation. Furthermore, the increased clearance counteracts undesirable distortion when tight fits cause the rings to expand or contract.

What are the key features of the ECP cage design?

At SKF, the designation ‘ECP’ stands for an optimised internal design combined with a polyamide cage. This material ensures flexible guidance of the cylindrical rollers whilst keeping the weight low. This cage design operates quietly and is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees.

How is the open cylindrical roller bearing lubricated?

As there are no integrated seals, the lubricant reaches the raceways and cylindrical rollers directly. Depending on the requirements, lubrication is carried out using grease or oil via the surrounding housing. External seals in the adjacent structure protect the bearing housing from the ingress of contaminants.

What tolerance classes apply to the NU208 cylindrical roller bearing?

This design combines dimensional accuracy to Class P0/PN (equivalent to ABEC 1) with finer running accuracy to Class P6 (equivalent to ABEC 3). Whilst the mounting dimensions comply with standard industrial tolerances, the improved running accuracy ensures particularly smooth and consistent shaft concentricity.
