SKF NJ228 ECJ/C3 cylindrical roller bearing: A single-row support bearing with a 140 mm bore, 250 mm outer diameter and increased C3 radial clearance for high radial loads.
The SKF NJ228 ECJ/C3 cylindrical roller bearing, as a single-row radial roller bearing, can accommodate very high radial loads. Thanks to its optimised internal design, the bearing distributes any contact stresses evenly across the rolling elements. This design features a robust sheet steel cage that guides the rollers precisely. The open design, without an integrated seal, allows the roller bearing to be flexibly integrated into existing oil or grease lubrication systems.
This cylindrical roller bearing is used in bearing arrangements subject to high radial loads and single-sided axial guidance. The NJ design acts as a support bearing: it supports radial loads and guides the shaft in one axial direction. In the opposite direction, the design compensates for axial length changes without constraint. The inner ring can be removed from one side, which facilitates the installation and maintenance of the bearing assembly.
The designation C3 indicates a slightly increased radial clearance compared with the standard clearance. This additional clearance between the rollers and raceways helps to compensate for stresses when heat builds up during operation or when fits cause the bearing rings to expand. Furthermore, the roller bearing is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees. With dimensional accuracy to P0 and increased running accuracy to P6, it ensures low-vibration, smooth operation.
In a support bearing configuration, the NJ type absorbs axial forces in one direction whilst compensating for longitudinal movement of the shaft in the opposite direction. The design features two fixed flanges on the outer ring and one fixed flange on the inner ring. As the inner ring is withdrawable, both bearing rings can be fitted separately.
With an internal diameter of 140 mm, an external diameter of 250 mm and a width of 42 mm, the bearing complies with standardised dimensions. These key dimensions enable it to be fitted precisely into housings and onto shafts of the corresponding dimensions.
The abbreviation ‘EC’ denotes an optimised internal geometry designed to ensure favourable stress distribution at the ends of the rollers. The letter ‘J’ indicates a cage made of pressed sheet steel. The suffix ‘C3’ denotes a factory-increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version.
The permissible temperature range is between -30 and +150 degrees. Within these limits, the materials used for the rings, rolling elements and steel cage retain their mechanical strength and dimensional stability provided they are properly lubricated.
In terms of its main dimensions, the bearing complies with tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1. In terms of running characteristics, the design meets the tighter tolerance class P6 or ABEC 3, which contributes to smooth concentricity and low vibration.
As this version is manufactured as an open design without integrated seals, sealing is provided by the surrounding housing structure. Depending on the operating requirements, the roller bearing can be supplied with either lubricating oil or grease via the machine’s lubrication system.
