The SKF NU2218 ECP/C3 single-row cylindrical roller bearing (90x160x40 mm) accommodates high radial loads and compensates for axial length changes when used as a floating bearing.
The NU2218 ECP/C3 cylindrical roller bearing is a single-row roller bearing designed for demanding industrial applications. Thanks to the modified line contact of the cylindrical rollers, the bearing can withstand very high radial loads. In the NU design, the outer ring has two fixed flanges, whilst the inner ring is flangeless. This design allows for axial displacement of the shaft relative to the housing within the bearing itself.
Design engineers and maintenance personnel primarily use this design as a conventional floating bearing. Typical applications include shaft mountings in mechanical and plant engineering, where operational thermal expansion of the shaft must be compensated for without constraint. Thanks to the low weight of the polyamide cage, the bearing also performs well during rapid acceleration and at higher speeds. As the inner ring can be removed from both sides, the unit can be fitted in sections, which simplifies maintenance work.
The suffix ECP denotes an optimised internal design featuring a polyamide cage. This type of cage operates quietly, absorbs shocks and reduces internal friction. The permissible temperature range extends from –30 to +120 degrees Celsius. The C3 bearing clearance indicates a slightly increased radial clearance as supplied. This ensures that the required operating clearance is maintained even with tight fits on the 90 mm shaft or in the event of temperature differences between the inner and outer rings.
The bearing has an inner diameter of 90 mm, an outer diameter of 160 mm and a width of 40 mm. These dimensions correspond to the standardised NU2218 series. It is an open, single-row roller bearing without integrated lip seals.
At SKF, the abbreviation ECP stands for an optimised internal design combined with a polyamide cage. This design results in improved roller guidance, low friction torque and high elasticity under shock loads within the permissible temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees Celsius.
The designation C3 indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. This helps to prevent the bearing from seizing during operation if tight shaft or housing fits cause the inner ring to expand, or if operational heat causes the bearing rings to expand unevenly.
In the NU design, the outer ring guides the rollers between two fixed flanges, whilst the inner ring has no flanges. This allows the shaft to move freely axially within the bearing. The component therefore accommodates radial loads exclusively and counteracts thermal stresses in the drivetrain.
The bearing combines dimensional accuracy in the standard P0/PN class (comparable to ABEC 1) with enhanced running accuracy in class P6 (ABEC 3). It therefore offers precise concentricity with standardised mounting dimensions for industrial housings and shaft seats.
As the NU2218 ECP/C3 cylindrical roller bearing is an open bearing, it has neither sealing washers nor factory-applied grease. Lubrication is provided by the surrounding system, for example via oil circulation or an application-specific grease fill in the housing, which must be sealed to prevent the ingress of contaminants.
