The FAG NJ317 -E-M1 cylindrical roller bearing combines a high radial load capacity (85 × 180 × 41 mm) with single-sided axial guidance thanks to its support bearing design.
The FAG NJ317 -E-M1 cylindrical roller bearing is a single-row radial roller bearing with a bore diameter of 85 mm, an outer diameter of 180 mm and a width of 41 mm. Thanks to the line contact between the rollers and raceways, the design can accommodate high radial loads. In the NJ version, the bearing has two fixed flanges on the outer ring and one fixed flange on the inner ring. This makes the unit suitable as a support bearing that guides shafts in an axial direction whilst allowing for relative longitudinal displacement.
Designs incorporating NJ-type cylindrical roller bearings are used where heavy radial loads prevail and axial compensation movements of the shaft are required. The inner ring, which can be removed from one side, allows the inner and outer rings to be fitted separately. This facilitates installation where clearance is limited in industrial bearing arrangements. At the same time, the fixed flange on the inner ring absorbs axial forces from one direction, whilst compensating for thermal length changes in the opposite direction.
The version with a brass cage (M1) is characterised by high dimensional stability and strength. Compared with standard cages, brass withstands severe vibrations, shock loads and demanding accelerations. In conjunction with the specified temperature range of –30 to +150 degrees, the bearing is suitable for thermally demanding environments. As an open bearing without integrated sealing washers, external sealing of the bearing housing and appropriate lubrication with grease or lubricating oil must be provided.
This single-row cylindrical roller bearing from FAG offers high radial load-carrying capacity in a compact design. With a brass cage and standard radial clearance, it can withstand demanding mechanical loads. The NJ design functions as a support bearing and accommodates axial loads from one direction, whilst the inner ring is removable from one side.
The bearing has an inner diameter of 85 mm, an outer diameter of 180 mm and a width of 41 mm. The outer ring is designed without a lubrication groove. It is manufactured to the ‘Normal’ tolerance class (P0/PN or ABEC 1), which ensures a precise fit on standardised shafts and in corresponding housings.
A characteristic feature of the NJ design is the presence of two fixed flanges on the outer ring and one fixed flange on the inner ring. As a result, the bearing acts as a support bearing: it guides the shaft axially in one direction and allows axial movement in the opposite direction to compensate for thermal expansion.
The brass cage guides the cylindrical rollers precisely and maintains a defined distance between them. Brass materials offer good damping properties and high mechanical stability. This makes this design particularly suitable for continuous operation in the presence of vibrations, shock loads or higher operating temperatures.
The operating temperature range specified for the cylindrical roller bearing is -30 to +150 degrees. Within these limits, the bearing rings and brass cage retain their dimensional stability. When designing the bearing assembly, care must be taken to ensure that the selected lubricant is also suitable for the relevant ambient temperatures.
As the bearing is manufactured without integrated seals, the surrounding housing structure is designed to prevent the ingress of dirt and moisture. Depending on the application, lubrication is provided by grease or circulating oil. An open design allows for the unimpeded exchange of lubricant throughout the entire rolling element chamber.
