The SKF NU308 ECJ/C3 cylindrical roller bearing, as a non-locating bearing with a 40 mm bore, offers high radial load-carrying capacity whilst accommodating thermal length changes in the shaft.
The SKF NU308 ECJ/C3 cylindrical roller bearing, as a single-row roller bearing, withstands high radial loads. Thanks to its optimised internal design and guided sheet steel cage, this design is suitable for demanding industrial applications. As the inner ring has no flanges and can be removed from either side, this design functions purely as a non-locating bearing. It compensates for axial displacement of the shaft relative to the housing without inducing stress within the bearing.
Design engineers primarily use this design in bearing arrangements where the shaft undergoes operational length expansion. The open bearing without seals is used in assemblies where an external supply of lubricant, such as oil or grease, is provided. With a permissible temperature range of –30 to +150 degrees, the component covers a wide range of operating conditions in mechanical engineering. The outer ring is designed without a groove or lubrication bore.
The suffix C3 indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard clearance. This counteracts the risk of the rolling elements becoming jammed when operational heating or tight fits reduce the operating clearance once the bearing is installed. In combination with dimensional accuracy to tolerance class P0 (ABEC 1) and increased running accuracy to P6 (ABEC 3), the roller bearing ensures low-vibration operation under high radial loads.
The component has a bore of 40 mm, an external diameter of 90 mm and a width of 23 mm. These standardised dimensions allow for direct installation on suitable shafts and in compatible bearing housings, without the need for any adjustments to the bearing seats.
The NU design denotes a non-locating bearing with two fixed shoulders on the outer ring and a shoulderless inner ring. This allows the inner ring to be withdrawn from either side. This design accommodates radial forces only and fully compensates for axial length changes in the shaft within the bearing itself.
Bearing clearance class C3 denotes greater radial clearance when new than in the standard CN version. This margin is recommended where there are temperature differences between the inner and outer rings, or where tight fits on the shaft and housing reduce the internal clearance after press-fitting.
This version features a sturdy sheet steel cage. The abbreviation ECJ indicates the optimised internal geometry. The cage maintains a precise spacing between the cylindrical rollers, prevents the rolling elements from coming into contact with one another and keeps friction and wear to a minimum during operation.
This open bearing does not have any integrated sealing washers. Lubrication is provided by the surrounding machine’s lubrication system using oil or roller bearing grease. The bearing location therefore requires external sealing elements, such as shaft seals in the machine housing, to prevent the escape of lubricant and the ingress of contaminants.
The bearing combines two levels of precision: the dimensional accuracy corresponds to tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1 for standardised mounting dimensions. The running accuracy is specified to tolerance class P6 or ABEC 3, which ensures improved concentricity of the raceways during operation.
