The SKF 29318 E axial self-aligning roller bearing, with a 90 mm bore, 155 mm outer diameter and 39 mm width, accommodates high axial loads on one side.
The 29318 E axial self-aligning roller bearing is primarily used where heavy axial loads act on shafts and misalignment must be compensated for at the same time. As a single-direction rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6), it provides stable support for components and, thanks to its crowned rollers, accommodates misalignment between the shaft and the housing. Manufacture to standard tolerance P0/PN (ABEC 1) ensures reproducible fits in industrial mechanical engineering.
This bearing is primarily suitable for designs subject to high axial forces at moderate speeds. Typical applications include shaft mountings where heavy axial loads and shaft deflection occur. The spherical housing raceway allows the roller set to self-align. This prevents the bearing from experiencing excessive edge pressures on the rolling elements and reduces internal stresses caused by dynamic angular misalignment under load.
The Explorer version from SKF is characterised by a optimised internal geometry and refined contact surfaces. In combination with the guided sheet steel cage, the 29318 E axial self-aligning roller bearing retains its dimensional stability and is suitable for a temperature range of –30 to +200 degrees. When designing the system, it is important to ensure that a minimum axial load is always applied to the single-sided bearing to prevent slippage between the rollers and raceways.
The bearing has a bore of 90 mm, an outside diameter of 155 mm and a total width of 39 mm. These standardised key dimensions define the installation space required on the shaft and within the housing, enabling the bearing to be precisely matched to the surrounding structure.
The term ‘single-direction’ means that the bearing can support axial loads in one direction only. If axial forces act in opposite directions, the design must incorporate a corresponding counter-bearing. When subjected to an axial load, the bearing can also support a certain proportion of radial forces.
The permissible operating temperature range is from -30 to +200 degrees. Both the 100Cr6 roller bearing steel and the sheet steel cage are designed to withstand this temperature range. The specific temperature limit during operation also depends on the lubricant selected.
The tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1 denotes the standard specification for rolling bearings. It specifies the permissible range of deviations from the nominal dimensions and running accuracy. For standard mechanical engineering and industrial applications, this class offers a level of dimensional accuracy suitable for practical use.
A minimum load prevents the rollers from sliding along the raceways instead of rolling as they rotate. This slippage can lead to increased wear. A defined axial preload or operating force serves to maintain constant rolling contact between all rolling elements.
The rings and rollers are made from through-hardened standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6), which is designed to withstand high compressive loads. The rolling elements are guided by a dimensionally stable sheet steel cage, which maintains an even spacing between the rollers and ensures smooth running.
