The 52224 double-acting axial deep-groove ball bearing from FAG Wälzlager, with dimensions of 100 × 170 × 68 mm, accommodates axial forces from both directions.
The 52224 axial deep-groove ball bearing guides shafts in the axial direction and supports alternating longitudinal forces. As it is manufactured from standard rolling-bearing steel (100Cr6), the bearing unit remains dimensionally stable under high loads. The integrated sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly along their raceways and keeps lubricant requirements low during operation. This design is intended for applications in which purely axial loads act on the bearing without any radial forces.
This bearing design is used for the axial fixation of shafts on both sides. It is primarily used in mechanical drives where alternating thrust forces occur in the longitudinal direction. As the bearing is designed to act on both sides, it accommodates thrust forces in both axial directions and serves to limit axial movement of the shaft. This thrust bearing must not be subjected to any radial load; therefore, separate radial bearings within the overall system must guide the shaft transversely to the axis.
During installation, precise alignment of the mating parts is required, as this design is not angle-adjustable. Misalignment between the shaft and housing leads to edge stresses, which is why flat contact surfaces are necessary. The scope of supply comprises the axial bearing only, without washers. Thanks to the standard tolerance of P0/PN or ABEC 1, the component can be integrated into standardised housings. For operation, the permissible temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees must be observed.
This design accommodates purely axial forces acting on the bearing arrangement from both directions. The bearing supports the shaft axially and counteracts displacement during load changes. Due to its design, this type of bearing cannot accommodate radial forces, which is why it must be used in combination with separate radial bearings.
The main dimensions of the bearing are 100 mm internal diameter (bore), 170 mm external diameter and 68 mm overall width. These standardised dimensions allow for a precise fit when installed in standardised industrial housings. When designing the system, sufficient clearance must be allowed for housing washers and the lubricant supply.
Alignment errors cannot be compensated for with this variant, as the bearing is not designed to be angle-adjustable. The connecting parts on the housing and shaft must be machined so that they are exactly at right angles to the bearing axis. Misalignment or tilting places uneven loads on the raceways and shortens the service life of the components.
The permissible temperature range is between -30 and +150 degrees. Within these limits, the components made from 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel and the sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability. For continuous operation, the selected lubricant must also be specified for the operating temperatures encountered.
The roller bearing complies with tolerance class P0/PN, which corresponds internationally to the ABEC 1 standard. This standard tolerance provides defined dimensional and running accuracy for conventional mechanical engineering. It enables the cost-effective manufacture of connecting parts whilst ensuring a secure fit on the shaft and within the housing.
A sheet steel cage operates inside the bearing. This type of cage guides the balls evenly along their orbits, prevents the rolling elements from coming into contact with one another and reduces frictional heat. Sheet steel cages are suitable for a wide range of temperatures and are compatible with all common mineral oil- and synthetic-based lubricants.
