The FAG 53222 axial deep-groove ball bearing, with dimensions of 110 × 160 × 40.2 mm, is designed to accommodate unidirectional axial forces in mechanical engineering.
The 53222 axial deep-groove ball bearing is designed as a separable rolling bearing to accommodate high axial loads in one direction. Manufactured from standard rolling-bearing steel (100Cr6), this bearing consists of a shaft ring with an internal fit, a spherical housing ring and the ball ring situated between them. Thanks to its separable design, the shaft ring, rolling element set and housing ring can be fitted separately. A dimensionally stable sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements along their circular path and prevents direct contact between the balls.
This design is specifically intended for the transmission of unidirectional axial forces and supports shafts axially against fixed housing surfaces. Typical applications include vertically mounted shafts or wherever continuous thrust forces need to be absorbed. It is important for the design that the load directions are strictly separated: this bearing does not accommodate radial forces. If radial loads occur in the system, additional radial bearings must be incorporated to guide the shaft.
The housing washer for this bearing has a spherical outer surface. Only when combined with a hollow-spherical washer – which must be procured separately – does the system become angularly adjustable. This design compensates for misalignment or skew between the shaft and the housing bore during assembly. The washer is not included with this item. Provided the housing already has a suitable spherical counter-contour, the housing washer can also be fitted directly into it.
With a bore diameter of 110 mm, an outside diameter of 160 mm and a height of 40.2 mm, the bearing complies with the standardised main dimensions. These specifications relate to the axial deep-groove ball bearing alone, without a washer. When designing the assembly, the appropriate fits on the shaft and housing must be observed.
The thrust bearing absorbs axial forces from one direction only. It is not designed to withstand radial forces. If combined loads occur during operation, radial forces must be supported by a separate rolling bearing, such as a deep-groove ball bearing or a cylindrical roller bearing.
To allow for angular adjustment, the spherically curved housing disc requires a spherical mating surface. A suitable washer forms this hollow spherical surface and enables alignment in the event of misalignment. Without a washer or a housing with a spherical finish, the bearing remains rigid.
The permissible operating temperature range is from -30 °C to +150 °C. Both the standard 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel and the sheet steel cage are designed for these temperatures. To ensure reliable operation, it is essential to ensure that the selected lubricant can withstand the operating temperatures encountered.
Manufacturing is carried out in accordance with tolerance class P0/PN, which corresponds to the international ABEC 1 classification. This standard tolerance meets the usual requirements in mechanical engineering for dimensional and concentricity accuracy.
The cage is made of profiled sheet steel. This material is resistant to standard mineral oil-based lubricants and reliably guides the rolling elements whilst being lightweight.
