SKF double-row angular contact ball bearing 3308 ATN9/C3 with a 40 mm bore and an outer diameter of 90 mm, designed for combined radial and axial loads in both directions.
The 3308 ATN9/C3 double-row angular contact ball bearing, with its 30-degree contact angle, accommodates radial forces as well as axial loads in both directions. The open design, without integrated sealing washers, allows for direct lubricant supply via the surrounding housing system. Manufactured from standard rolling-element bearing steel (100Cr6), this design offers increased running accuracy to tolerance class P6 (ABEC 3). The lightweight polyamide cage guides the rolling elements with low noise and low vibration.
This design is used in applications where bearing positions must be radially supported whilst being precisely guided axially in both directions. Functionally, the bearing corresponds to a paired set of single-row bearings in an O-arrangement, but requires less axial space. Typical applications include bearing arrangements subject to combined loads, as well as industrial applications with operating temperatures ranging from –20 to +120 degrees Celsius.
The suffix C3 indicates a slightly increased radial clearance. This increased clearance compensates for operational thermal expansion between the inner and outer rings, thereby preventing mechanical stress during operation. The polyamide cage reduces the component weight and operating noise. During assembly, it should be noted that an external housing seal is required for the open rolling bearing to prevent the ingress of dirt.
The double-row bearing has an inside diameter of 40 mm, an outside diameter of 90 mm and a width of 36.5 mm. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has neither a flange nor a groove. Its dimensions allow for direct installation in standardised housing bores and on suitable shaft seats.
Tolerance class P6, comparable to ABEC 3, specifies tighter dimensional, geometric and running accuracy than the standard tolerance. The concentricity of the inner and outer rings is more precise, which reduces vibrations at higher speeds. This ensures precise guidance of the shaft under dynamic operating conditions.
The C3 classification denotes a larger radial bearing clearance than in the standard version. If a temperature gradient develops between the shaft and the housing during operation, or if tight fits are selected, the internal bearing clearance is reduced. The C3 clearance prevents premature seizing of the rolling elements and protects against excessive friction.
The polyamide cage guides the two rows of balls, which are lightweight and highly elastic. Compared with metal cages, the plastic effectively dampens vibrations and operates quietly. The material is designed for a specified continuous temperature range of –20 to +120 degrees Celsius and is compatible with standard mineral oil-based lubricants.
As this model is supplied from the factory without sealing or cover plates, the design requires external sealing elements such as radial shaft seals or labyrinth seals in the bearing housing. Open designs offer the advantage that grease or lubricating oil can circulate freely and be completely replaced during maintenance intervals.
Due to its 30-degree contact angle, the angular contact ball bearing transmits combined forces at an angle to the radial plane. The double-row arrangement absorbs axial forces evenly from both directions and offers high tilting rigidity. The bearing is therefore suitable for guidance applications where moments and alternating thrust forces occur.
