The SKF 3306 ATN9/C3 double-row angular contact ball bearing, measuring 30 × 72 × 30.2 mm, accommodates radial and axial loads on both sides within a compact installation space.
The SKF 3306 ATN9/C3 angular contact ball bearing is an open, double-row rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6). With a bore of 30 mm, an outer diameter of 72 mm and a width of 30.2 mm, this component accommodates combined forces. As no sealing washers are fitted by the manufacturer, lubrication is provided via the lubrication circuit of the surrounding structure when the housing is externally sealed.
This bearing design is used when rotating shafts must simultaneously accommodate radial guidance forces and axial forces acting in both directions. Thanks to the contact angle of 30 degrees, the double-row arrangement transmits axial loads in both directions. Compared with two paired single bearings, the unit requires less axial installation space. Typical applications include compact shaft mountings with combined load directions and housing-side oil or grease lubrication.
The suffix ATN9 denotes a polyamide cage, which guides the rolling elements with low vibration and reduces the moment of inertia of the bearing assembly. The permissible temperature range is between –20 and +120 degrees. The version with C3 bearing clearance has a slightly increased radial bearing clearance. This increased clearance compensates for thermal expansion during operation or diameter variations in fixed bearing seats without causing stress. Furthermore, the bearing meets tolerance class P6 or ABEC 3 for precise concentricity.
The bearing has an internal diameter of 30 mm, an external diameter of 72 mm and a width of 30.2 mm. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has no flange or circumferential groove. These dimensions comply with standard series for mounting in housings and on shafts.
The designation C3 indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard clearance. The internal clearance between the balls and raceways is slightly greater. This helps to prevent the rolling elements from seizing up if temperature differences occur between the inner and outer rings during operation, or if tight fits constrict the bearing.
The suffix ATN9 indicates a polyamide cage. This material is characterised by its elastic running properties and low inertia. The cage guides the two rows of balls within the specified temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees and ensures smooth, low-friction operation.
The open design does not feature any sealing or cover plates fitted by the manufacturer. This allows lubricating oils or greases from inside the housing to reach the rolling elements freely. A suitable external housing seal must be fitted at the bearing location to protect against dirt and moisture.
The contact angle of 30 degrees describes the direction of force transmission between the rolling elements and raceways, which is at an angle to the radial plane. This enables the bearing to accommodate radial forces and, at the same time, axial forces on both sides. The design combines the function of two mirror-image angular contact ball bearings in a single, space-saving unit.
Tolerance class P6 denotes tighter manufacturing tolerances in terms of dimensional and running accuracy compared with the standard normal tolerance. This accuracy grade is suitable for shaft guides where uniform, low-noise concentricity is required and the clearance in the machine seat must be precisely controlled.
