The FAG 3220 double-row angular contact ball bearing (100 × 180 × 60.3 mm) accommodates high radial forces as well as axial forces on both sides in mechanical engineering applications.
The 3220 angular contact ball bearing is an open, double-row rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6). Due to the arrangement of two rows of balls, the internal design functions in the same way as two single-row bearings placed opposite each other, whilst requiring less axial installation space. Fitted with a sheet steel cage and standard radial clearance, this FAG roller bearing is suitable for a wide range of industrial applications. It is used where combined forces need to be effectively supported.
The double-row angular contact ball bearing 3220 is particularly suitable for bearing locations where, in addition to strong radial forces, axial forces act in both directions. Thanks to its defined internal geometry, the bearing offers high rigidity against tilting moments on the shaft.
Typical applications include general mechanical engineering and gearbox construction, as well as industrial powertrains. As this is an open design, lubrication is provided via a housing lubrication system or by manual greasing during assembly.
The open design of the 3220 bearing does not feature integrated sealing washers. This means there are no friction losses caused by rubbing sealing lips, which enables favourable running characteristics within a temperature range of -20 to +150 °C.
When designing the bearing mounting, a suitable external housing seal must be provided to protect the bearing from dirt and moisture. With key dimensions of a 100 mm bore, 180 mm outer diameter and 60.3 mm width, the rolling bearing can be precisely fitted into housing openings in accordance with tolerance class P0/PN.
With an internal diameter of 100 mm, an external diameter of 180 mm and a total width of 60.3 mm, this design complies with standardised mounting dimensions. The roller bearing has a cylindrical outer ring without a flange or groove. Thanks to tolerance class P0 (ABEC 1), it can be fitted precisely onto shafts and into housing bores.
Open angular contact ball bearings are primarily used in enclosed gearboxes or housings where lubrication is provided by an existing oil or grease circulation system. As there are no abrasive seals, the bearing operates with minimal torque resistance and low heat generation. Protection against particles and lubricant loss is achieved structurally via external seals on the assembly.
Double-row angular contact ball bearings have two raceways set at an angle to one another, meaning that the contact lines of the balls form a V- or O-shape. This arrangement effectively supports both radial and axial forces in both directions. Compared with single-row designs, this construction saves valuable installation space whilst also withstanding any tilting moments that may occur.
Normal bearing clearance refers to the internal clearance between the rolling elements and the raceways when the bearing is unassembled. This design is intended for typical operating temperatures and standard fits, ensuring smooth, low-vibration operation once the bearing has been pressed onto the shaft.
The permissible temperature range is between -20 and +150 °C. The 100Cr6 material and the heat-resistant steel sheet cage remain dimensionally stable within this range. A prerequisite for trouble-free operation at extreme temperatures is always the selection of a lubricant that is suitable for the respective thermal load.
The sheet steel cage keeps the rolling elements at a distance, separates the balls from one another and ensures an even load distribution. Sheet metal cages are lightweight, resistant to common industrial oils and greases, and resilient to mechanical shocks. Furthermore, the sheet metal construction takes up little lubricant space inside the bearing.
