The 7228 -B-MP angular contact ball bearing, with a 140 mm bore and a 40-degree contact angle, can accommodate high unilateral axial and radial forces.
The 7228 -B-MP angular contact ball bearing from FAG Rolling Bearings is a single-row radial ball bearing for industrial applications. Thanks to its angularly arranged raceways, this rolling bearing effectively transfers combined loads. The bearing is made from standard rolling-element steel (100Cr6) and operates with standard radial clearance within tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1. The open bearing has an outer ring without a flange or groove and is suitable for lubricated installations.
This bearing is primarily suitable for designs in which radial forces and significant axial forces act simultaneously in one direction. Thanks to its 40-degree contact angle, the component effectively transfers axial loads to the housing structure. Typical applications include bearing arrangements where shafts must be guided safely under unilateral axial and radial loads. As single-row angular contact ball bearings can only accommodate axial forces from one side, the bearing arrangement usually requires a suitably positioned mating bearing.
The built-in brass cage guides the rolling elements precisely within the raceway, even under demanding operating conditions. Brass is characterised by high strength and good emergency running properties in the event of a lack of lubricant. Together with the permissible temperature range of –20 to +200 degrees, this cage variant enables use in units subject to thermal stress. As the bearing is of an open design, you can tailor the type of lubricant and external sealing precisely to your environmental conditions.
A single-row angular contact ball bearing of this type has raceways in the inner and outer rings that are offset at an angle to one another. This design accommodates radial forces as well as unidirectional axial forces. The FAG rolling bearing version features a solid brass cage and complies with the standard tolerance class P0/PN.
The component has an internal diameter of 140 mm, an external diameter of 250 mm and a width of 42 mm. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has neither a ring groove nor a flange. This means the bearing fits into standardised cylindrical housing bores.
The contact angle describes the line of action of the force between the points of contact of the balls and the raceways relative to the radial plane. An angle of 40 degrees ensures that the bearing has a high axial load capacity, but restricts the absorption of axial forces to a single direction.
The roller bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -20 to +200 degrees. Both the 100Cr6 roller bearing steel and the brass cage retain their dimensional stability within this temperature range. A lubricant with the appropriate temperature resistance is essential for reliable operation at high temperatures.
Open bearings are supplied ex works without cover plates or sealing washers and are not pre-lubricated with grease. Dirt particles or moisture must not come into direct contact with the raceways. The bearing housing therefore requires external sealing on the casing, as well as suitable oil or grease lubrication, prior to commissioning.
A single angular contact ball bearing can only accommodate axial forces in one direction. In practice, it is therefore mounted in a mirror-image configuration opposite a second bearing. This paired mounting in an O or X configuration supports the shaft against alternating axial thrusts and provides the required operating clearance.
