The SKF 3203 ATN9 double-row angular contact ball bearing (17 × 40 × 17.5 mm) accurately supports combined radial and axial loads on both sides, whilst featuring a compact design.
The 3203 ATN9 angular contact ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing with a 17 mm bore, a 40 mm outer diameter and a width of 17.5 mm. Manufactured from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6), this component has a contact angle of 30 degrees and two rows of balls. Thanks to this design, the unit can accommodate both radial loads and axial forces from both directions. As an open roller bearing without sealing rings, it is suitable for use in oil- or grease-lubricated systems within a temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees Celsius.
Design engineers and maintenance personnel use double-row angular contact ball bearings wherever alternating or bidirectional axial forces occur in conjunction with radial forces. Thanks to the 30-degree contact angle, the bearing supports shaft guides with high rigidity without the need to fit a separate pair of bearings. Typical applications include shaft mountings with guiding forces acting on both sides and combined loads. Thanks to tolerance class P6 (ABEC 3), the shaft runs with dimensional accuracy and low vibration, provided the bearing location remains protected from dirt and adequately lubricated.
The suffix ATN9 denotes a polyamide cage, which ensures quiet running of the rolling elements. As the bearing is of open design, you are free to select lubricants and lubrication intervals to suit the specific application. For installation, a dust-protected housing is recommended to prevent particles from entering the raceways. Together with the standard radial bearing clearance, this model accommodates typical installation tolerances, whilst the outer ring – which has no groove or flange – is fitted directly into cylindrical housing bores.
This double-row angular contact ball bearing has an inside diameter of 17 mm, an outside diameter of 40 mm and a total width of 17.5 mm. With these standardised key dimensions, the bearing can be used to replace existing components from the 3203 series during repairs without the need for any design modifications to the shaft or housing.
The contact angle describes the line of action between the rolling elements and the raceways relative to the radial plane. An angle of 30 degrees enables the bearing to effectively accommodate combined loads. As a result, the double-row bearing provides stable support for both radial and axial forces in both directions.
The designation ATN9 refers to a polyamide cage which guides the balls and keeps them spaced apart. Compared with solid metal cages, this design is characterised by its lower weight and smooth running action. The material is suitable for operating temperatures ranging from -20 to +120 degrees Celsius.
Tolerance class P6 or ABEC 3 denotes a tighter manufacturing tolerance compared with the standard normal tolerance. The bearing is characterised by higher concentricity and dimensional accuracy. This benefits applications that require precise shaft guidance and reduced vibration.
As this roller bearing is supplied ex-works without sealing washers, there is no initial lubrication inside. You should apply the appropriate lubricant – grease or lubricating oil – directly into the bearing housing during assembly. An external housing seal protects the open bearing from contamination and lubricant loss.
Standard radial bearing clearance is designed for installations with standard fits and uniform operating temperatures. Provided there are no significant temperature differences between the inner and outer rings, the required operating clearance remains after press-fitting, ensuring smooth running and minimal wear during operation.
