The SKF 32217 tapered roller bearing accommodates high radial and single-direction axial loads and has compact dimensions of 85 × 150 × 38.5 mm.
The 32217 tapered roller bearing is a single-row roller bearing in metric design that combines the absorption of high radial forces with axial loads from one direction. Thanks to the line contact between the tapered rolling elements and the raceways, this design offers high rigidity during operation. The complete SKF bearing in Explorer quality consists of an inner ring with a set of rollers and a guided sheet steel cage, as well as the matching outer ring.
This bearing design is preferred for applications involving combined loads consisting of radial and single-direction axial forces. As a single tapered roller bearing, by its very design, can only accommodate axial forces in one direction, it is usually fitted in pairs in an X or O arrangement opposite a second bearing. This mirror-image arrangement guides shafts in both directions, and the required operating clearance can be precisely adjusted once the bearings are fitted.
The bearing is manufactured to the standard tolerance class P0/PN (corresponding to ABEC 1), which means it meets the usual requirements in mechanical and plant engineering. A cage made of pressed sheet steel guides the rollers and promotes the flow of lubricant within the bearing. The permissible operating temperature range is from –30 to +120 degrees Celsius, which allows for a wide range of applications when lubricated with industrial oils or rolling-element bearing greases.
The bearing has an inner diameter of 85 mm, an outer diameter of 150 mm and a total width of 38.5 mm. These dimensions comply with the standardised series for metric tapered roller bearings and allow for direct replacement in existing designs and bearing housings.
Due to its design, a single-row tapered roller bearing can only accommodate axial loads from one direction, as the rolling elements run at an angle to the shaft axis. To accommodate axial forces in both directions, two bearings are arranged facing each other. The operating clearance is adjusted directly during assembly using shaft nuts or shims.
This model is fitted with a sheet steel cage. The sheet steel cage guides the lightweight conical rollers, withstands impact loads and resists standard lubricants as well as operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +120 degrees Celsius without thermal deformation.
P0, or ABEC 1, refers to the standardised tolerance class for rolling bearings in terms of dimensional, geometric and running accuracy. Bearings in this class are suitable for the majority of general mechanical engineering applications and for industrial drive technology, where there are no extreme precision requirements such as those found in tool spindle construction.
The inner ring, complete with the full set of rollers and cage (cone), can be fitted separately from the flangeless outer ring (cup). This ability to separate the components simplifies installation and removal work on shafts and within housings, as both bearing rings can be fitted separately onto their respective bearing seats.
The bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +120 degrees Celsius. Within this range, the microstructure of the rolling-bearing steel and the dimensional stability of the steel plate cage are maintained. The choice of lubricant must be tailored to the actual operating temperature range.
