The FAG 32228 single-row tapered roller bearing accommodates combined radial and axial loads in industrial applications, with main dimensions of 140 × 250 × 71.75 mm.
The 32228 tapered roller bearing is a complete standard-design rolling bearing from FAG. The design consists of an inner ring with a set of rollers and a separate outer ring. With a bore of 140 mm, an outside diameter of 250 mm and a width of 71.75 mm, this design is intended for high-load shaft mountings. The tapered rolling elements transmit loads via line contact, enabling the bearing to transmit high forces whilst maintaining a compact design. The integrated sheet steel cage keeps the rollers evenly spaced.
Design engineers and maintenance technicians primarily use the 32228 tapered roller bearing in applications where high radial forces and single-sided axial forces occur simultaneously. Typical applications include industrial gearboxes and heavy-duty drive trains subject to high mechanical stress. As a single single-row bearing can only accommodate axial forces in one direction, it is usually fitted in a mirror-image configuration with a second tapered roller bearing. This paired arrangement creates a backlash-free, rigid bearing arrangement for rotating shafts.
This bearing complies with the standard tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1 and meets standard industrial accuracy requirements. As the inner and outer rings can be fitted separately, the separable design makes installation considerably easier. During assembly, care must be taken to ensure precise adjustment of the axial bearing clearance via the mating bearing. The permissible temperature range is from –30 to +120 degrees Celsius, limited by the thermal stability of the components. A suitable lubricant must be applied to ensure correct operation.
With a bore diameter of 140 mm, an outside diameter of 250 mm and a total width of 71.75 mm, the bearing complies with standardised metric dimensions. These dimensions define the design and facilitate a precise fit onto the shaft and into the housing bore in mechanical assemblies.
Thanks to the inclined conical raceways, the single-row bearing accommodates both radial loads and axial forces in one direction simultaneously. To accommodate axial forces on both sides, position two tapered roller bearings opposite each other – for example, in an O or X arrangement – to achieve a rigid, axially guided shaft bearing arrangement.
The specified temperature range is from -30 to +120 degrees Celsius. Within this range, the rings, rollers and steel cage retain their dimensional stability. For continuous operation, it is recommended to use a lubricant whose viscosity is suited to the given operating temperature.
The sheet steel cage keeps the individual rollers spaced apart and prevents the rolling elements from coming into contact with one another. This reduces friction and heat build-up during rotational movement. At the same time, the cage holds the rollers in place on the inner ring, so that the pre-assembled inner ring set can be handled and fitted as a single unit.
This classification describes the standard manufacturing accuracy for dimensional, form and running deviations in accordance with international standards. Class P0, also known as standard tolerance PN, corresponds to ABEC Class 1 in the ABEC system. It is suitable for the majority of general mechanical and plant engineering applications without specific high-precision requirements.
As an open bearing unit, model 32228 has no integrated seals. This allows for flexible lubrication with grease or oil, depending on the application. External seals should be incorporated into the surrounding structure to prevent the escape of lubricant and the ingress of dirt particles.
