The FAG 32224 tapered roller bearing can withstand high combined radial and axial loads and has the main dimensions 120 x 215 x 61.5 mm.
The 32224 tapered roller bearing is a single-row roller bearing in standard design. The product is designed as a complete tapered roller bearing, comprising an inner ring with a set of rollers and a matching outer ring. Thanks to the tapered arrangement of the rolling elements, the bearing is suitable for combined loads where strong radial and unilateral axial forces act on the shaft simultaneously. With a bore of 120 mm and an outside diameter of 215 mm, it is designed for demanding shaft support applications in mechanical engineering.
This tapered roller bearing is used wherever heavy loads and defined guidance accuracy are required. Typical applications include industrial gearboxes and, more generally, heavy machinery and plant engineering, particularly in highly stressed bearing locations. As single-row tapered roller bearings, by their very design, can only support axial forces in one direction, designers usually fit this component in pairs with a second bearing in an O or X arrangement. This pairing ensures play-free guidance of the shaft under varying load directions.
The integrated sheet steel cage guides the tapered rollers precisely and withstands mechanical stresses during operation. It allows operating temperatures ranging from –30 to +120 degrees, making the bearing suitable for a wide range of thermal operating conditions. The standard tolerance version (P0/PN or ABEC 1) allows for straightforward replacement where standard requirements for concentricity and dimensional accuracy apply. During installation, the outer ring can be fitted separately from the inner ring with the roller cage, which simplifies handling during assembly.
With an internal diameter of 120 mm, an external diameter of 215 mm and a total width of 61.5 mm, the bearing complies with the standardised dimensions of the 32224 series. When carrying out repairs or designing new assemblies, these three values serve as a direct reference for precise fitting onto the shaft and into the housing.
Due to its inclined raceways, the 32224 tapered roller bearing can withstand high radial loads as well as single-sided axial loads. The rollers run in a straight line along the raceways, resulting in significantly higher rigidity than with ball bearings. For alternating axial forces, a second tapered roller bearing must be fitted in a mirror-image, opposite configuration and aligned accordingly.
The permissible operating range is from -30 to +120 degrees. This temperature range is determined by the dimensional stability of the bearing components and the properties of the sheet steel cage used. When selecting the lubricant, care must be taken to ensure that the grease or oil is specified for these operating temperatures.
P0 or ABEC 1 refers to the standard tolerance class for rolling bearings and defines permissible deviations in key dimensions, as well as flatness and concentricity. For the majority of industrial applications, this tolerance class provides sufficient guidance accuracy, meaning that replacement bearings fit into standardised bearing seats without the need for reworking.
Tapered roller bearings are not self-retaining. The outer ring can be completely separated from the inner ring, including the set of rollers and the cage. This simplifies mechanical installation in gearbox housings or on shafts, as both rings can be fitted thermally or mechanically independently of one another.
Due to the manufacturing process, a single-row tapered roller bearing does not have a fixed bearing clearance. The operating clearance is only created during installation by deliberately positioning the bearing against a second bearing. Fitters use shims, shaft nuts or adjusting screws to set the required axial clearance in accordance with the operating conditions and the expected temperature rise.
