The FAG 31318 single-row tapered roller bearing, measuring 90 × 190 × 46.5 mm, is designed to withstand high radial and unilateral axial loads in mechanical engineering applications.
The FAG 31318 tapered roller bearing is an open, single-row roller bearing designed for demanding industrial applications. It is characterised by tapered rollers and raceways, the lines of action of which converge on the axis of rotation. As a result, the bearing can simultaneously accommodate high radial forces as well as unidirectional axial loads. As a complete rolling bearing, this design comprises the inner ring with a set of rollers and the separately mountable outer ring in a standardised design.
Design engineers typically use the 31318 tapered roller bearing in bearing arrangements subject to combined loads, where radial and unidirectional axial forces are present. Due to the line contact of the rollers, it offers high rigidity against tilting. As a single tapered roller bearing can only accommodate axial forces in one direction, it is usually fitted in pairs with a second bearing arranged in a mirror image. This allows the operating clearance to be precisely adjusted via the axial preload.
FAG fits this bearing with a sheet steel cage, which keeps the rolling elements spaced apart and absorbs vibrations. The design is rated for operating temperatures from –30 to +120 degrees, covering typical ranges in mechanical and plant engineering. With the standard tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1, the bearing meets the standard precision requirements for concentricity and dimensional accuracy for continuous industrial use.
With a bore diameter of 90 mm, an external diameter of 190 mm and a total width of 46.5 mm, the bearing complies with standardised metric dimensions. These key dimensions allow it to be fitted in existing machine designs. Before installation, the mating surfaces on the shaft and in the housing bore should be checked.
Single-row designs are engineered to accommodate simultaneously acting radial and axial forces. Force transmission takes place via the taper angle of the rollers, whereby axial forces are supported in one direction. For alternating axial forces or guidance on both sides, two bearings are mounted facing each other, for example in an X or O configuration.
The sheet steel cage guides the conical rolling elements along the inner ring raceway and prevents them from coming into contact with one another. The material is characterised by its dimensional stability under mechanical vibrations and its resistance to temperature fluctuations. Furthermore, the pressed cage takes up little space inside the bearing, leaving sufficient clearance for the lubricant to flow.
This model is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees. Within these limits, the bearing rings and the sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability. When specifying the lubrication, care must be taken to ensure that the selected grease or lubricating oil is also approved for this temperature range.
The designations P0 and ABEC 1 denote the standard tolerance class for the bearing. This classification defines permissible deviations in terms of dimensions, shape and concentricity. Bearings in this class meet the standard requirements of general mechanical engineering and offer a good balance between manufacturing precision and cost-effectiveness.
Tapered roller bearings are not designed to be self-retaining. The inner ring, together with the set of rollers and the cage, forms a single unit, whilst the outer ring can be fitted separately. This feature facilitates the sequential installation of the shaft and housing, as well as the subsequent inspection and maintenance of the rolling element raceways.
